I have read that Mega Arms produces one of the best lower receivers. If this is true, are they really noticeably better than something like a premium PSA receiver? Is it just the Mega 'billet' receivers that are so much nicer or are their standard 'forged' receivers a step above, as well? On a 'standard' build that is NOT for competition or "going to war", will the supposed upgrades be relevant?

As far as the forged ones, from what I can tell (I've a buddy who has a few Megas), the receivers are smooth and have a consistent finish. They deserve to be placed in the category of "nice" receivers in that there's really nothing bad to be said about them. I think my Spike's receivers are every bit as nice and the only reason I could see paying $15-$20 more for the Mega forged lower would be if you preferred the rollmark or the extra cosmetic machining on the front of the magwell. Either way, it's a brand you can definitely buy with confidence.

Yes on both counts (forged and billet). The only lower I have that matches them is from AXTS.

Thanks to everyone that has replied. However no one has stated whether or not differences would be noticeable in function. So far it seems that the differences are mainly cosmetic with the better machining process.

Probably will see no difference in function. Though many including myself will pay a little extra coin for quality aesthetics, because in the grand scheme of things, when spending over $1000 building a rifle with top tier components, why would you skimp out on the receiver set and not get something to match the brand quality of the rest of the build? Everyone has their opinions though and I respect that.

MEGA is the industry standard....IMO.

It's absolutely worth the extra coin.

This question gets asked five times a week minimum.  I don't have a mega lower.  I have several brands though.  The only thing I have ever gotten mad enough at to smash in my garage is the polymer shit.

There isn't going to be a difference in function.  Does a Tahoe work just as good as an Escalade? Yes.  Is one "nicer than the other"? Yes.

I don't know about the forged ones, but the billet lowers have a torsion snubber that keeps the upper absolutely snug and quiet not that I have ever needed that because the fit is perfect to begin with. then there is the ambidextrous bolt release

Same.  Their billet ambi lower is nice.  Never needed to use the tension screw either.

I've never heard of one being out of spec.  That is why I use them.

MEGA is the best, hands down. I've got a boatload of their forged sets and billet sets.

Mega makes great stuff.  Forged or billet, you cannot go wrong.

Thank you very much for the info. It is exactly what I needed to know.

A Mega upper and lower will fit together more precisely than (insert your brand here) 9 times out of 10. Functionally, they (the forged sets) work the same as any other lower. One of their billet lowers adds an ambi bolt catch and all of the billet sets have the lower/upper tensioner. Even a "throw it down the driveway" guy can appreciate the craft that goes into producing a Mega.

Mega forged has been the best I've used.  Others are good as well, but Mega has been the most consitently impressive.

When my wife decided she wanted her own rifle I nervously decided to do my best not to push her in any direction unless she chose a real shit component. I was thrilled when she chose a matching Mega billet upper/lower. I knew of their reputation for quality, she was reminded of her fav show, The Big Bang Theory, by the Mega logo. I didn't care how we got there, I was just glad she went Mega.

It was my first real experience with Mega. I was blown away by the fit, finish and quality. Flawless all the way around. Nicer than my Noveske receivers without a doubt.

You don't have to have "going to war" as a goal to appreciate high quality. A matching set of Mega receivers is a GREAT way to start a build right. Sure you could buy some no-name crap shoot quality receivers but why? Mega. Done...

My first lower was a MEGA, damn nice lower.

My first lower was/is a MEGA from Rifle Gear. Well machined, well finished, I really like the tensioning screw, and I like the Rifle Gear roll mark.

The only thing remotely close to an "issue" I've run into is that the magwell flare does not get along with handguard removal tools. It will allow the tool to slip out. Does this matter? Not really as I don't need to remove the handguard often. Worst case is that I move the upper to another lower to get them off.

As for the grippy surfaces on the front of the magwell: I don't hold the rifle there when shooting so they don't have much pull for me.
