16inch setup. I dont plan on using for long distances...more so for shorter distances/shtf.
I want to get a red dot...do i need a magnifier for slightly longer distances? Do they also magnify the red dot and block the target? Are they useful? Also, is it recommended to have buis with this setup? Seems like a lot on the rail... Any help is appreciated |

I went with a Vortex Sparc 2 RDS for my 16" HD/SHTF rifle, it's a 2MOA dot and good to at least 200 yards on a "man sized" target no problem. There's also Holosun's 400-series with 2MOA dot and their 500-series which have an Eotech style 2MOA dot with circle. Vortex and Holosun both have options under $300 and most people dig theirs. Or just get an Aimpoint if you can swing it.
Irons are good to have for when your battery powered optic doesn't function at the worst possible time. The popular options out there all come in at under 1/2" off the rail when folded down and will not obstruct your sight through the red dot. |
| Whatever works for you and what you can afford. If you can afford and AImpoint T-2, then that will be perfect for what you want. I used to have an expensive magnifier but never again. There are two reasons for that. 1) If I want to shoot further then I just grab another rifle and 2) I took if off anyway. That being said I plan on buying a cheaper magnifier because, IMHO, it makes sighting in the red dot a little bit more precise and can be a little fun at the range. It makes the dot more crisp. This is just my $.02. Hope it helps. |
