As a complete noob to building an AR15 and wanting to keep my first build as cheap as possible, is this worth buying ?   http://palmettostatearmory.com/ptac-16-mid-length-5-56-nato-1-7-phosphate-rifle-kit.html
I've done a bit of reading on this and other sites so I've become familiar with the fact that there's better quality stuff. Just need to keep it low cost for now.

Tnx,
Jeff

Spend the extra 20 bucks and get this one, the nitride barrel is more than worth it.

ETA: may want to contact psa and confirm barrel is nitrided, description is a little vague (not unusual for them).

PTAC (Practical Tactical) is sorta a bargain basement AR parts maker that I guess Palmetto bought.  Any of the PSA branded kits should be of higher quality, but I can't say that for sure, since they could just use PTAC and not mention it now that they own them.   PSA has been known to source FN barrels, but I don't know how to determine which, maybe someone can say?

I would actually wait for Black Friday it's only a 2 weeks away there will be some great deals on PSA. I would go with a CHF build kit if I were you. Otherwise the nitride kit is better than Phosphate klt

Quick lesson for you when it comes to PSA ... PTAC < Freedom < Premium.

Get a Premium rifle kit if you can afford it.

My first build was a PSA blemished lower and a Premium Rifle Kit and it's still my favorite gun.

Depends on what YOU want it for.
Here's a good rifle kit for a good price, free shipping, premium barrel, Magpul stuff $489

But I'd wait until the Black Friday deals, you may find a better deal.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Anxiously awaiting Black Friday. In the mean time I found this.     http://allegiantrifleworks.com/product.black-friday-preorder-ar-build-kit-2275       One concern is the Wylde barrel. My understanding is that it limits me to strictly using .223 ammo. Any thoughts ?

PS: Main uses will be plinking and home defense.

"The .223 Wylde is a proprietary rifle cartridge chamber with the external dimensions and lead angle as found in the military 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge and the 0.2240 inch freebore diameter as found in the civilian SAAMI .223 Remington cartridge."

That means it's safe for both .223 and 5.56.

Just find an upper that you like and buy a lower build kit

I don't know anything about allegiant rifle works.  The wylde chamber will shoot .223 and 5.56 ammunition just fine.

Thanks Mike. Excuse all my questions. It's how I learn that of which I'm ignorant. I understand what you said about the Wylde barrel. So is there one of the chamberings that are caliber specific. Hope that question makes sense to you.

A 5.56 chamber can fire both a 5.56 mm and a .223 cal. round.  I have been very happy with the PTAC line from PSA.

That's the info I'm looking for tnx. And I'm guessing a .223 chamber cannot fire a 5.56
