I have a question about measuring overall barrel length.

From where to where on the barrel do you measure?

Do you measure from the end of the barrel extension to the end of the barrel (or in my case, pinned muzzle device)?

The reason I ask is because I bought a 14.5 voodoo barrel with a pinned manimal flash hider and it seems short.  When I hold it next to my 16" faxon barrel it is about 1/8" shorter.  I am wondering if the faxon barrel is like 16.1" or if my voodoo barrel is short.

Since it is the difference between being a felon and maintaining my liberty, I would like to know exactly how to measure the barrel to put my mind at ease.

You would think a barrel pinned from the manufacturer would be GTG but this one has me wondering...

The ATF method is to use a rod down the barrel, so measuring from the breech face to the muzzle.

If you're measuring an AR15, make sure the rod isn't sitting on the ejector which will push it 1/8" out.

Everything I have read it is from the bolt face to the end of the barrel or flash hider in your case.  I used a small dowel rod to measure mine.  I measured and marked 16 inches on the dowel rod then dropped it down the bore. On both of mine the line dropped below the end of the flash her so I was gtg.

By using this method it is not as close as I suspected.  I have 1/4" to spare.  Thank you.

Most manufactures of Ar15 barrels I would suspect measure them by the length of the barrel itself before the extension is attached, that would add the dimension of the bolt face to the front of the locking lugs to the length when measured by the ATF method.
