I have a noveske gen3 upper and an nsr I've been trying to align. I know I have it close but it's still a little off. If you run your fingers where the rail meets the upper you can feel it out of alignment. It seems like no matter what when I loosen it and twist the rail in my hand it ends up a centimeter or two in the wrong direction.

It's pretty positive it's not a barrel nut issue because I can miss align it in either direction and tighten down the screws. It's more of everything is just so snug when I move it I can't seem to get it to stop in the tiny fraction of movement I want. I might try it in a vice. Anyway I was hoping for some tips from you guys as well. Thanks in advance.

I normally put an optic mount across where the two rails meet. That way it kind of holds the two in alignment.

Really snug, but not tight, and a few whacks with a rubber mallet?

I used one of the YHM SLR tubes recently and was having the same trouble.
I finally clamped the rails together.
Which is what the instructions said to do.

Yep.  Use some sort of long, continuous rail mount accessory, ideally one with two lock-down points, and clamp it across both the upper rail and the hand guard rail while you tighten down the screws or whatever hold the hand guard in place.

It's a good re-purposed use for old removable carry handles.

That's the technique I use as well.

The free float rails are subject to misalignment when manufactured. All manufacturing processes require precision in order for the longer rails to line up perfectly.
I have received rails that are flawed. Please purchase longer rails from reputable manufactures or suffer the consequences. Have fun and keep updating those old
hand guards.

All good info guys thanks! I figured I'd get a lot of clamp it with accessories tips I don't have any long accessories but I have lots of tools so I'll figure it out.
