Ok, so I've finally felt the irresistible call of stoner and his black rifle. I've decided to "build" (assemble) my own. I have decided or already purchased just about every part except the actual barrel.
There are just so many good options, it's mind boggling. Between blank manufacturers and barrel finishers there are likely hundreds of different shops large and small all selling barrels. To name just a few: Advanced Ballistics, AR Performance, FN, Wilson Combat, Daniel Defense, BCM, Black Hole Weaponry, Douglas, Compass Lake, WOA, Green Mountain, Noveske, Larue, Criterion Krieger, Bartlein, and Lothar Walther. This is what I am looking for in a barrel: -14.5in mid gas (will be using an adjustable gas block), will have a suppressor mount permanently attached for NFA compliance (Likely a Specwar K FH mount). -1:7 or 1:8 twist (or anything inbetween). For anything serious I will be using TMKs, 75gr TAP, mk. 262 clones, 70gr TSX etc. -"Polygonal" (or similar) Rifling of some variety. -4140 or 4150 nitride (or similar), or 410, 416R or LW-50 SS. -~1 MOA or better accuracy & precision with decent ammo, using the 5, 5 shot groups @ 100 yards method (one ten shot also acceptable). I am capable of utilizing a 1 moa gun on a good day, and this build will be shot at 400+ yards, likely once a month, so it does matter. -Must be able to take the occasional mag dump without (in the short or long term) losing too much accuracy or having too drastic a POI shift in class or on a "fun" range day. -Must be relatively light (the rest of the build is quite light), preferably slim or medium profile (or light or pencil but I'm not sure if they can take the heat well, it depends on the manufacturer and profile I've been told). I'm looking to spend NO MORE than $300, and less than $250 if I can get away with it. In fact, the lower the better as long as it meets the above criteria. Thanks in advance for your recommendations ! |

I'd would look at these guys. I'm very pleased with my purchase from them. Others have more experience with them than me and could chime in. Keep us posted.

Yeah BHW seems to be quite a good deal, and I liked how quickly they responded to my email haha. The only other company the seems to offer poly rifling for sub $300 in 14.5in is Rainier Arms. Anyone know how they compare to BHW? |

Interesting, does anyone happen to know long the leads are at BHW right now? Also is there any real difference (other than color) between a shot peeked finish and the cerakote finish? I figure they are at 8-10 weeks now on most orders. Cerrakote is applied to the barrel and the blackening is a batch process with a bath. Cera takes about an extra 3 weeks according BHW when I talked to them last week. The might actually have something on the shelf that meet your needs. I saw a ton of short black 556's up there in the shop when I was up for a marketing conference two months ago with them. They will meet your accuracy and longevity requirements without a strain. I have two blackened barrels at my 'smiths right now to be built. A 25X45 along with a 556 dimpled and a 20 Tactical on the way. I have a black 25X6.8 in the corner here at the house. It is quite attractive IMHO. I think at last count I own around 30+ BHW AR barrels and another 10 of the Savage bolt gun tubes Greg |

Haha that is quite a selection! Do you have any of the lighter profiles (slim, light)? I am very curious as to how they perform under heating. With 1-2 mag dumps does the POI or POA shift at all? Do you run any suppressed? Thanks for in the info! I have a couple lights. Mag dumps don't really open up much. If shooting milparks upper A-zone hits aren't any issue. I prefer a standard weight for most 3Gun stuff. Kind of old school. .lol. i havea new KTB Victory series integral brake I want to try. It is very light in a 16". Compensation is very good m I have one done in a 458 SOCOM and it tames it well. No suppression in my stable yet but that is a coming attraction. I happen to know some manufacturers so the price will be right. Greg |

Also anyone heard of these guys (micromoa) http://micromoa.com/14-5-midlength-fluted-5-56-nato-1-7-barrel/ ? No personal experience but they are suppose to be very accurate barrels for price. Another vote for rainier. Can't go wrong with woa, larue for higher end. But faxon and ballistic advantage for lower priced quality barrel. Only one I haven't shot or owned is the faxon. |
| I am in the process of building my first AR so I can't give you first hand knowledge. I also will be running suppressed. I went with a Rainer SS because accuracy I supposed to be slightly better than CMV and I doubt I will dump a ma. I thought that 4150 CMV was supposed to be able to handle heat a little better (hopefully someone can correct me if that is wrong). The Govnah barrels would be nice cause the AGB is already mounted. A 3 position Govnah will require a decent size rail due to its size. The 2 position will give you the ability to run a slimmer rail. I believe the Midwest SS is the most narrow on a 3 position. Look at their picture for what rails each of their AGB can run. |

These two are diametrically opposed. Light weight / thin barrels do not do mag dumps or hard use without POI shifts, often quite dramatically. Quoted:

We would respectfully disagree. There is a relative middle ground (assuming the use of "relatively" light). For example, our GUNNER barrels were designed for this kind of shooting. |

for my pinned 14.5" middy, I picked up an FN barrel from Riflegear.com. I love it personally. I mated it with a Spikes Dynacomp which in hindsight was a mistake, but That rifle will be a gift to my sister.
I think 2 years ago when i bought that barrel it was 289. CHF, govt profiled, midlength, 1:7 twist |

One member of the site shot one of their blem barrels to about 1/2 inch moa in the moa all day challenge if I remember correctly. Might have been a 16" though. I bought one of their 16" blems(non fluted) for $180 but have yet to shoot it. |
