I purchased my LAR-15 about 4 years ago, and have been quite pleased. I love using it for bench shooting and longer distance shooting, but when I'm shooting fast or plinking, I don't use it. The handguard and barrel are too heavy for my liking, and the portion of the handguard that doesn't have any rails on it heats up pretty fast.

I have been shooting ar's since I was a kid, but I've never made any modifications to them. I'm fairly familiar with the lower and upper, but have no clue about rails, barrels or gas tube/blocks.

I am wanting to either build or purchase a complete upper with a 10.5" barrel and a 10" rail. I will be getting an SBR stamp for it. My hope is to carry both with me in the case.

The barrel on my RRA is a 16" NATO 5.56, so I was thinking of doing the same for the SBR. I am looking for a black, free floating quad rail, and just the standard A2 flash hider. if I build, I know I need the upper, the BCG, the charging handle, rails, barrel and gas tube/block. Am I missing anything?

I am looking to avoid breaking the bank, but I don't want to throw money away either. Do you guys recommend looking anywhere specifically? Also, is there anything in particular that I need to look for to make sure my new upper will be compatible with my RRA lower?

Sorry if I sound clueless, but I am. I'm not even sure what questions to be asking. TIA.

If you plan to build, look around palmetto state armory. That have good deals on what I consider a pretty good manufacturer.

If your upper comes stripped, you'll need a upper parts kit. That just has all the small stuff (dust cover assembly, forward assist).

Since this is just going to be a blaster, I'd suggest a chrome lined barrel at least. If it were me I'd go cold hammer forged.

Money plays a part in what manufacturer you'll want to buy from. But I have experience with PSA, and BCM and though my BCM is my go to gun, either of them should serve you well.

Again these are my own opinions/suggestions others may tell you different. So do your homework and figure out what works for you.
