I ordered some Forster headspace gauges from brownells. One is laser engraved 5.56 NATO 1.4736 MAX Dthe other is laser engraved 223 REM 1.4646. The barrel is 5.56. I am a bit concerned that I was sent the wrong gauge being labeled 223 REM. With the bolt stripped neither gauge allows the bolt to completely engage, but when I put live ammo in the bolt engages fully. Any ideas?

Are they no-go gauges? if so they shouldn't let the bolt engage.

Reread your post it should close on the 223 gauge but not the max 5.56 one. Never used those particular gauges so I can't swear by my info. Someone that knows those gauges should come along.

They are supposed to be go and no-go gauges. Given the dimensions engraved on them, they are go and no-go gauges.

I have checked both gauges multiple times.

You were sent the correct gauges.
.223 and 5.56 headspace in the same way.

The 1.4736 represents a worn chamber....you should not be able to close a stripped bolt on this gauge.
If you can, the rifle is considered unsafe.

The 1.4646 represents a new chamber....you should be able to close a stripped bolt on this gauge.
If you can't, then the chamber is short and not to spec.

Those are the two best gauges to have.

So if it won't close on a min spec gauge why does it close on a live round? Is the gun unsafe to fire if the chamber is out of spec in this fashion?

The bolt should be stripped of the ejector, prior to checking headspace.
Did you do that ?
Never let the bolt fall on a headspace gauge.
Just press it closed with your finger.

New ammo can be a touch undersized to assure chambering in a new chamber.

bolt is completely stripped. Bolt was not dropped or slammed into place.
