I am building my first rifle and I want to know what the best possible barreled upper would be. I am thinking about splurging on the daniel defense but I don't want to do anything compulsively. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would like a 15' rail on it so any suggestions on brands or the best sites to get them would be great.

Build it!

Aero Precision Upper $80
ARP barrel $200
BCM Charging handle $45
BCG $120
$155 left for rail and muzzle device and will out shoot a DD or BCM (for when the DD and BCM fanboys arrive )

I would think one of the BCM's around that price.  Not sure that they have the free BCG group offer any more?

And I wouldn't call myself a BCM fanboy  He (or she) asked for the best value ($600) pre-assembled upper.

BCM would be a little more with a free float rail but for a standard barrel not by much that or DD wich may be more would be great choices. If you build the upper wich I never have you could make a nice one with all the options but if i did i would end up with a 1000+ dollar upper probally.

You haven't given any details on what your looking to use it for. Might give us a hint... hunting (if so what game), range toy, etc. Barrel length, barrel weight, bullet weight, etc

If your looking for accuracy, one of these would do nicely. WOA Pushing your price limit slightly though.

+1 on more info and use. You can go with a Black hole weaponry barrel. SAA had them for around $250 or so and came with a free stripped upper.

Don't go buy a complete upper. You can build one to your excact needs and far less expensive than a complete.

Yeah, "Best possible" for what??

Shooting 1 moa out to 1000 yards??  Target shooting to 100 yards and sitting in the safe 95% of it's life??
Hard charging full auto CQB and must function in worst possible conditions??

The best deal on 4150 chrome lined barreled uppers is still Palmetto State Armory when they are in stock.

I just ordered a spikes upper from aim surplus for 499.00 I've heard good things about them so I thought I'd try one out. My other AR upper is an aero precision upper witha 16" BCM mid length barrel, YMFG bcg and a MW Industry quad raiI bought the parts a little bit at a time with that one it cost more than the spikes but less than 600.

i also vote to build it. you can cut costs on the upper and handguard if you want to buy a better barrel.

I think AIM still has some Daniel Defense uppers for $660.  If I was really trying to hold it under $600.  AIM has some 16" mid length barrels for a little over $100 plus one of the AIM nitride bcg for $100 .  Add a blem Anderson or PSA upper with build kit for $65ish and whatever rail you want.
