First post on the forum, so forgive me if I missed other topics that covered my question.
I have been looking at getting a new AR15. I like the BCM uppers, and thought about purchasing or building a lower. One of my pet peeves are stiff safety selectors. This is probably because my first AR was a Rock River and it was very smooth in the operation of the safety selector (among other things that made it great). My second AR was an S&W M&P15T and its safety selector is what I would describe as "stiff". I have also held the Daniel Defense MK18 and I would consider its safety selector on par with my rock river. Given my preference, if I were to build a lower, are there certain LPKs that would give me that smooth operation or is it something in the building process that gets it there? Side question: If I am looking at a BCM 11.5" upper group, are there particular lower receivers and LPKs recommended for that? Ex: this will obviously not be a long range weapon, so I have a feeling that will dictate the trigger/LPK that I choose. I am expecting to spend $1000 - $1500 on this AR. I come to you all who have experience for advise. Thanks in advance. |

I have assembled 3 lowers in the past year and used Red Barn Armory's Build your own LPK. I've been pretty happy with them and it allowed me to select some upgrades (which I would have made anyway if I bought a mil spec kit). No issues with any of the parts and I really like the ambi bad ass safety selector.

| Thanks for your quick response. While I know that just just about any lower will go with any upper, I have heard guys with BCM uppers say they prefer the fit of certain lower receivers (less wobble or play?) I also thought certain LPKs might have a smoother selector because of their parts or quality. Maybe in your example the S&W M&P15 LPK detent is slightly different than the RRA & DD detents? I am not sure if anyone has any experience with Spikes Tactical, but I am looking at their complete lowers and LPKs, anyone know if these might be of the quality and finish I described? |

Quoted:
There is no specific lower or LPK for any specific upper. The two are independent of one another. The stiffness of the selector is due to how the detent engages the selector. You can always polish the contact points to make it smoother if it's a little stiff. +1 You could also cut a few links from the spring or drill the hole in the grip deeper. I drill the deeper hole so I always have a standard length spring, best way I've found to set the tension on the selector.. |
