I am wanting to start an AR10 build, I have never built any ARs before. However having shot them for years along with other platforms I get the idea and have a solid understanding about how to disassemble and reassemble. The way I see it is it can't be that hard lol. I do need some advice as to what order to start purchasing pieces. Is it just about what I can find and such? Any input at all will be greatly appreciated!

Hi OUDAN,
I would start with your lower receiver. Either complete or stripped. The lower receiver is the serial  numbered part that (depending on your states laws) needs to be acquired from a licensed gun dealer, or transferred through a licensed dealer (an FFL). You'll notice online sellers all say "must ship to a FFL". You need to find your local FFL to do transfers for you. Doing the lower receiver first gets the paperwork out of the way. So decide basically on a collapsible stock or fixed stock rifle and find your lower. If you're undecided, get a stripped lower. Good luck and have fun doing it.

The tacked threads on building are a good place to learn. -W

ETA: Some people also buy stripped because they want to put every single piece on the gun in themselves. I know one of my goals in building AR's has always been to take used parts or dismantled parts and make them into functional rifles and carbines. To create something from a parts pile. I always get a kick out of that. One mans junk is another mans treasure! -W

I am going to go with a stripped lower because I want to build every part of the rifle the way I want it. Does anyone know what companies make .308 lowers? From what I can tell they need to be comparable with the DPMS upper

With the AR-10 platform, there are two sub-types which determine which parts fit with and are compatible with each other. DPMS pattern and Armalite pattern. Theres many manufacturers and they are all one or the other. Parts for both are readily available. -W

I had read somewhere that there are more parts for the DPMS platform, does that sound correct?
