Being retired but still having that ar-15 addiction I have to be conservative with my hobby monies. I have recently become
fascinated/interested in the free float light weight hand guards appearing on the scene.
The problem is most of them are out of my income bracket. I would hope some manufacturer
would realize the potential for the massive demand for these free float light weight hand guards and
start mass producing them at a lower cost here in the good old US of A. I do try to support my
nations work force when I can. Your input welcome!

Free-float and 'not expensive' usually don't go well toegther. There can be some exceptions though, if you don't mind giving up
Piccatiny rail space.  There are some Carbon or fiberglass free-float tubes that aren't outrageously expensive and there
are some cheap, lightweight aluminum free-float rails out there, but you're going to get what you pay for with these latter ones.

What exactly is your budget? Might help someone help you narrow down your options.

ill help u out bro... the light weight free-float hand guard i'll be getting (after hours of shopping around) is from http://www.atigunstocks.com/  they offer a carbine6" rifle11" and 15" length with other options..

for myself i will be getting this particular 1 http://www.atigunstocks.com/rifles/ar-15/ar-15/ar15-forends/ar-15-aluminum-8-sided-rifle-length-free-float-forend-with-fs8-nose-cone-and-utility-rail-package

and after a couple of searches i've managed to find a cheaper deal than what ATI offers http://www.inventorycheap.com/advanced-technology-intl-a-5-10-1147-ar15-al-rfl-lngth-frflt-frnd-w-fs8cone-rl.html  (but im waiting till it comes back in stock)

hope that might spark your interest inventorycheap.com also has the other length handguards w/ or w/out the nose cone handguad with slotted barrel nut or just the handguard itself  just look around  let me know if you find a better deal

a couple youtube vids if your interested

Midwest Industries is priced fair for a quality product.

I tried these out and love them. Sturdy, really light, and not super expensive.

ETA: I've used YHM, and Midwest Industries "lightweight" versions before.

Just installed midwest industries Gen2 ss handguard they are light and amazing. The quality is top notch. I installed the 12" version. Tons more room now. I replaced my Magpul MOE hand guard  that was carbine length. Totally different rifle

I recently got a GunTec, mid-length ultra-lightweight FF Keymod from Midsouth for about 65 bucks. I really like it. Screws on so no silly glue on's. Beat that.

I have a AP custom Carbon Fiber on my comp rifle and really like it. You can get them with rails or without and you can put rails in available slots. They run 150ish depending on top rail and length.

I thought the "glue" that midwest industries included was questionable. After taking 10 minutes to get the barrel nut out of the handguard so I could install barrel nut, I was sold. Very sturdy handguard. I doubt that "glue" was even necessary.

I think with the deals on gas blocks and panels the MI Gen2 SS handguard is hard to beat

+1 on AP Custom. I built a 14.5" midlength rifle that empty, but otherwise ready to shoot, weights 4.66lbs. It has an AP carbon fiber forend on it. They're great quality, and extremely light.

you didn't say what length you're looking for.
here's a set of 15" er's i put on a 16 inch barrel with a low profile gas block.
$91.95 in the door.
the barrel nut supplied is kinda heavy, but the rail makes up for it.

same thing in 12" for $84.95 delivered.

BTW the rails line up, (are the same height)

+1....I know a lot of people like the UTG Pro, but they are still an airsoft company and I will never buy their products, whether made in china or the USA.

I did the same thing. Then I figured out to thread it onto the upper a bit and then pull it out

Wow I should have thought of that! I used a small roll pin punch and tapped it out. Your way would have been easier!

It's one sweet rail that's for sure!

While I understand your reluctance to purchase UTG Products, Magpul is also a big name in Airsoft.

You can't compare the UTG Pro stuff to their airsoft stuff. The Pro line is top notch. I have a 9" quad rail on my son's dedicated .22lr and I just bought their Pro slim for a .22 upper for myself. Both are super solid. There is a 19 or 20 page thread on this site dedicated to the UTG Pro slim.  Not everyone can be wrong!
