So I'm very, very new to this.  When machining an 80% AR-15 lower, are there any changes needed to accommodate using the lower for a 7.62 variant?

I'll assume you are talking about 7.62x39. If so, no. Only difference is in the upper parts.

[Edit] I see that you are very, very new to this (your words), Just wondering why you are going with a 80% as your first lower and that caliber to boot? No offence, just curious. Also, look in the AR Variants section under the caliber specific FAQ's. Good info there.

Perhaps you'd do well to expound upon the form of "7.62" to which you refer.

7.62x25?
7.62x39?
7.62x45?
7.62x51?
7.62x54r?

There are others, but my hope is this list will illustrate why you don't just list the first part of a caliber when using metric nomenclature.

This is my first build of an AR platform, but I did build an AK-47 off of a Saiga that went very well.  Thus the 7.62x39 question (I have lots of ammo).  I'm also a custom knife maker, so working metal is not new to me and the process of milling out an 80% billet seemed relatively simple.  Truthfully, I already have a standard 5.56 upper (PSA Premium 1:7, M4 Carbine)  in hand to build my first AR-15 but thought I'd see what might be needed to make another in the 7.62x39 variant.  I know, I know ... I haven't even built one and I'm already planning another one. I have too many hobbies ... sigh

Thanks for the pointer to the Variants section, I'd overlooked that section.
