| Hey yall. I've been sneaking around getting a lot of good info for my first build. I wanted to build a "cheap" range gun to add to my collection and just mess around with or let friends/family tinker with when at the range. I've been piecing it together slowly and today I had an opportunity to pick up a barrel at a price that was way to good to pass up. It's a 16" gov profile with 1.9 twist. The trouble is there are absolutely NO markings on the barrel. How would I check to make sure if it's chambered for 223 or 556? |

It should have a manufactures code and a caliber stamp somewhere on the barrel, look near the barrel extension, often it is
there you will find a manufactures code/stamp as well as the caliber in some cases... I would be a little nervous about firing a round through a barrel of unknown manufacture, caliber, origin, etc...My suggestion is bring it to a knowledgeable funsmith to have him/her check it out and/or check for head-space and the like...Otherwise, I would only shoot .223 Rem. and not risk possible damage to the shooter/equipment/bystanders nearby if something goes wrong by shooting higher pressure 5.56mm NATO rounds through that barrel... If it was a really low cost/very cheap price there usually is a reason reason for It, just remember quality pays it does not cost most of the time, there are some tricks to help figure out if your chamber is a .223 Rem or a 5.56mm NATO . But that should be left to a advance shooter/funsmith... |

Who is the manufacturer? And the dealer? I havent seen a brand new govt profile barrel chambered in .223 rem in a loooong ass time. Same here good question. Just a thought... Maybe its a leftover barrel that dropped behind a stack of them and hasn't seen the light of day since the 80's. But yes I haven't seen them either in a long time.

| No, there are no markings anywhere. I got it from a reputable shop but their AR guy wasn't there. I'll take it to a smith to look over before assembling and firing it, thanks for that advice. I couldn't pass up the deal, if I can't get any solid verification I'll just set it aside and keep shopping. Thanks. |
