Does anyone have experience or feed back on the non reciprocating side charging uppers like the Gibbz G4 or the one from New Frontier?   (they all look similar, maybe the same manufacturer?)

Like this one

I am looking to build a suppressed pistol in 300BLK (Something similar to the Spikes Compressor or the Daniel Defense DDM4 ISR)  and would prefer a side charge upper to go with the Sig Brace.    I like the idea of being able to use any bolt carrier and not having a knob moving on the side of the upper when fired, but for what they cost, I don't want to go in without some feedback from anyone who has tried them.

Thanks

I've heard nothing but positive reviews on them.  I just wish they were less chunky and had an option for a dust cover like the ASA upper.

They are pretty slick. The fact that its half the price of an ASA and can take a standard BCG minus carrier key is great. The only gripe I have with it versus my ASA is the fact that the charging handle and dust cover pull back beside the receiver and stock and could get your cheek when you charge it. That all depends on how close your face is to the back of the upper. I also like dust covers at least and wish it had a deflector too like the ASA, but its still not a bad upper.

I'm considering it.

The handle cover has reputedly hit people in the cheek if they shoot "nose to the charging handle." And it's been suggested to just shorten it. Lots of combat arms ran with exposed bolts, nobody faults the Garand for having it hanging out in the wind. The money and aggravation installing a dust cover isn't a plus, and I don't need no stinking FA.

It's not lighter than a forged A3 upper. It does take getting used to if you have extensive training with the AR. I shot a HK for years, I can adapt.

I'm trying to justify the $130+ difference for the ability to charge the gun with the off hand and not have to move my face too far. A pistol isn't a combat rifle - it's not really a problem with me and my A3 upper on a deer rifle, you charge it once going to the deer stand and you're done for the day. Same in all the training I had for 22 years, I unloaded and charged more to clear the weapon admin than clear a FTF, even with blanks.

What makes the uber charging handles so cool is that they are on all those 3Gun rockstars and in pics online. Don't really need more than a GI handle. So, why do I want a Gibbz?

It remains to be decided. It's another $130 over a standard upper. That's what killed buying an ASA, and having the price come down means where do I find it acceptable?

$49 PSA A3 uppers are hard to fault.

Definitely food for thought.
The ASA is out of reach for right now, especially given the price of the suppressor and NFA tax stamp.

The sliding dust cover coming back and hitting my cheek could be a problem with the pistol buffer / Sig Brace being a lot more like shooting from a collapsed butt stock position, however, the intention is a CQB / home defense weapon so dust covers really aren't essential to me.
Maybe the thing to do is build it up with a standard M4 upper and retro fit to the ASA later if the side charge handle is still important to me.

Thanks for the input.
