Hey everyone I just joined this site and was hoping for a little bit of help. I am an infantry veteran and have a lot of experience with the M4 system. I want a civilian version that is closely associated with the m4 with some slight upgrades to the handguards and flash suppressor. Not sure which company to go with but I want a good quality weapon. Thank you for any help that you have to offer.

Colt and BCM seem like good values these days.

What sort of price point do you want to stay around?

The quality of your weapon is directly related to how much you want to spend.  There are areas of these builds that you can get by with going for some cheaper parts, but there are other places where going cheap is the wrong thing to do.  You can essentially build a very nice rifle for around 500 bucks if you look for deals and it has no frills, while on the other side of the spectrum, you can build a Noveske, Seekins Precision, etc. rifle for 2-3K with everything from rubberized pistol grip to a thermal optic.

To a point this is true. Where that line begins and ends is always up for debate.

Name recognition, unique designs, materials, fancy rollmarks and even finish colors do muddy the waters though. While these may add to a higher price the increase to actual quality comes  into question.

Pretty much any forged upper/lower combo is going to be identical.  You'll want a good BCG, barrel, FCG, and (maybe) optics.

Bravo Company is a good place to start, as is Spikes Tactical.

Or you could just buy a Colt 6920 for $800-$900 and buy a drop-in rail for $150-$250.  Sky's the limit on optics; for a red-dot go Aimpoint or Eotech; for glass whatever floats your boat.
