have built several for friends of friends for MUCH cheaper...basic milspec ar15s...sold them in the $6-800 and turned some profit...most of my cost was added up in months just after newtown...but oh well..it is mine..

1300 for one of the lowest quality rifles ? Even during the panic you could have done a lot better

hmmm...your list on top says your lower is "blemished" but you paid $119.99 + tax... seriously?

and you paid taxes on all the parts you ordered online? unless all those vendors are in SC...
8/17/2014 11:30:57 AM EDT
[#14]
hmm youre right...guess it wasnt blemished...yes most everything I bought was from psa which is located in SC

and yes...I KNOW I got screwed on about $200 due to the time I bought some of the parts...especially the lower build kit, bcg/ambi ch combo, and lower receiver...but that what supply and demand is all about...i could have saved money and gone with cheaper back up sights, cheaper ejection port cover, cheaper muzzle device, cheaper free float tube...but those were the things I wanted...

I had already decided to build one before Newtown and had already started looking for the lower receiver to buy then BLAM - along comes Newtown and there are no parts to be had anywhere at a decent price. My plan was to build it on a $500 budget. So, I kept with it. I finally finished mine last June. Total cost came out at $506.63 with 6 new P-mags in their packages, 2 Israeli surplus mags and one slightly used P-mag.

Adding the tools, the optic, the sling and sling swivel, the rail covers and 600 lumen tac light it came out at $602 and some coins. I had a lot of patience and kept looking for parts at really good deals plus I wanted a 1:8 twist barrel. So, the $500 rifle is very possible to build and even more so now that the whole Newtown mess is over.

The next one I have the stripped lower for already - it's going to cost around $750 though since it's going to be a 7.62x39 pistol build.

and id call this rifle far from low quality...

The difference I guess being able to afford what you want vs. only buying what you can afford. It's a nice looking rifle but kind of high priced. I got a deal for my Mag Tactical Systems lower receiver with the DPMS parts kit for $160 shipped. I also don't have to pay for FFL transfers. My local FFL does them for me for free. My stripped upper, the butt stock kit and all my mags also ended up being free. I built it all for what I could get at the best price and afford and simply kept looking for great deals from a variety of sources. My 1:8 twist barrel I got on sale for $99.82 with free shipping. I never had to pay any sales tax either. I was on a tight budget though - still am for that matter.

Nice rifle, so you have a little more in it than you would if you built it today, so what.

As long as you are happy with, that's all that matters.

Awesome build! You had to start somewhere even if the prices sucked. Now you can built 2 for that amount and be ahead of the game for next time!!

Buy a PRO!!!

I'll certainly agree with you there. It's NOT low quality. The BCG with the ambi charging handle is pretty much fair market value. I paid 106.50 for my Pegasus Defense BCG last December with shipping because it was on sale. If I had waited a few more months I could have saved about another $10 on a different company's BCG that went on sale.

It is a nice looking rifle for sure, kind of sad that it ended up having to cost you so much is all. If you start building another one, feel free to PM me for lists of companies for parts. I definitely recommend buying direct from manufacturers that are out of state so you don't get hit with sales tax. Shipping from anywhere in the lower 48 states will get to you within 5-7 days. I live WAY out in the middle of nowhere in Idaho and everything has always arrived to me. I know where you can get nitride barrels for $149 and chrome lined barrels at that same price. (Nitride/melonite is better than chrome lined by the way). If you aren't rushing it, you want to be notified when companies you like the parts from have sales and buy during the sales. My Anderson barrel was a Fathers Day sale with 10% off plus free shipping. The barrel was at my door 5 days after I ordered it.

I monitor and am notified by a wide variety of manufacturers of when they have sales. Next time one happens I'll make a thread for sales and post them in there for people. I just saw 7.5" 7.62x39 barrels on sale for $89.95 - normal price 169 and change. Now that I have the lower receiver not started I'm constantly looking for parts anyway also :) I'd go ahead and get a lower parts kit first but, I'm not in a hurry so I'll watch for the various parts I will need on sale and get whichever part comes along first at a really good price, then wait for the next one.

I won't buy the barrel yet because I'll know in a week or so if I'm going to get some parts free and if I do, then I'll be building the 7.62 as a 14.5" barrel carbine with a welded muzzle device instead of as a pistol.

BTW, that looks like a Mission First Tactical Battlelink stock (good choice for the stock also) - it's not in your Excel file though sooooo I'm guessing maybe the rifle cost you a $100 over your spreadsheet cost
