I have a Colt LE6940, I just got an AAC flash hider to mount my suppressor on. I would like to have a shorter barrel but have no idea where to start or if it's possible without getting a complete new upper. If this is possible could I get recommendations or any help that y'all could send would be much appreciated.
Thanks- Caleb |
| First step will be filing a BATF Form 1 to create an SBR (short barreled rifle) and after you get the stamp back then you can shorten the barrel.......swapping out a barrel is pretty simple if you have the correct tools........but without the stamp it is a felony. |
| It's possible, but not as easy on the 6940 as on most other AR models. The monolithic upper design requires a special tool to remove the sunken, proprietary Colt barrel nut in order to remove the barrel to have any work done on it. Special tool is $74 plus shipping at Brownell's. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/rifle-tools/wrenches/ar-15-m16-colt-law-enforcement-carbine-armorer-s-wrench-prod32517.aspx |

Thank you for your responses. I figured some sort of license was needed. But glad I know now for sure This is important. It's not a "license," it is a "tax stamp." It says that you paid the "making tax" to produce a Short Barreled Rifle. And put up with the very, very long wait to receive the stamp... There is NO "license" involved; licenses are something people get to do various things. Your state may require other things, but Federally, there's no license, just the $200 fee and the long wait. |

You could also do a 14.5" and pin and weld the flash hider to an OAL of 16". I just had John Thomas do a chop, pin, and weld on a 16" barrel down to 14.5" , it gave me an OAL of 16.125" and the Carbine is now 33" in total length with the stock in the position I keep it at. |
