I'm trying to decide if I really need the Forward Assist feature, has anyone ever needed it? I have my upper picked out but just curious about it.
Thanks. |

In my time in the army (almost 10 years now) I have only ever used it one time in adverse conditions with out making a situation worse. I had picked up a few dropped rounds during a night rifle range in basic training and they were wet and sandy. I wiped most of the sand off before putting them in my mag but needed the FA to close the bolt for the first three shots. After that the M16 ran fine. With that said every other time I used it other than to assist in silently closing the bolt on a rifle in the field it has only gotten an otherwise dirty round more stuck.
Now being a purist when it comes to AR's all of my personal ones have the forward assist but thats only because I think they look wierd with out them. Is it necessary? Probably not. The airforce didnt think so in the 60's either. But then again the army did. Its really up to you. I suppose if you are on an extreem budget then it's something you can do with out. |

I use it all the time. When hunting I do not chamber until I am ready to settle down in the stand, so I ride the CH home to keep things quiet then bump the FA to make sure the bolt closes all the way. Nice and quiet and I don't have to wake the dead or pull a charged rifle up to my stand with a rope.
Other than when actually hunting, I never touch it, but I wouldn't want an upper without it either. |

I've used it a couple times on super fresh mags when the first round doesn't quite make it in, but other than that I don't feel as if I'll ever need it. But it would look super weird without it and I believe in tradition. this. i needed it while i was breaking in/tuning my new 7.62x39 pistol built |

Eventually the mags loosened up a bit and it wasn't needed but for reasons like this Ill never have a rifle without one. Plus I think uppers without them look funny. I guess I'm just used to seeing/having it. |
| Thanks everyone for your input, it seems I have touched on a subject that has been "BEAT TO DEATH" literally DOZENS of times. I used the search and it only goes back 30 days and since I don't have HOURS of free time to spend searching the archives I just posted a question. I had no desire to debate this issue, I was just curious about it and while most all of you was very helpful there is always that one person.
