Building a light weight build, and trying to pick a barrel. I want a SLR adjustable clamp-on gas block, and a SLR Solo 13" Lite Rail. I haven't ordered the GB yet, so diameter is not important, I will base that on the barrel I pick.

Option 1 - DD CHF 16" LW Barrel - .750 GB - mid length
Option 1.5 - DD CHF 16" LW Barrel - .625 GB - carbine length

Option 2 - BCM 16" LW Barrel - .625 GB - mid length

Option 3 - VooDoo 16" Ultra Light Weight Barrel - .625 GB

Option 4 - Other?

Concern is barrel whip making the GB touch the rail, and want something that is reliable, and light.

The .625 options will be lighter, other things equal.  DD and BCM are both good to go.  I don't know about VooDoo.

IIRC the BCM Enhanced Lightweight barrel may be the lightest because they reduced the size of the larger diameter section behind the gas block.  I would probably  use that barrel if I was doing another lightweight build today.

IMO the gas block would have to be VERY close to the free float hand guard for barrel whip to cause contact.

No question, I would use a CHF barrel and you'd never regret one from Daniel Defense. With THIS BARREL you could use SLR's Sentry .625 gas block which has a very small profile.

That is what I was thinking too, I really wanted a midlength gas system, and for some reason the DD midlengths are only .750.

The BCM barrels are nice, but the tought part is, I can get the BCM for $251 and the DD for $255, both new and both shipped, so $4 for CHF is great but the GB size is not optimal, but not a killer.

I won't do any full auto, so I don't need the CHF, but it is nice to have.

DD is now standardizing at .750 for their barrels according to a thread in the industry forum. Any .625 barrels are new, old stock. If you look around you may find what you are looking for.

I found a .625 middy in 14.5" and can steer you toward one by PM if you are interested. The vendor still had a few at $279 the last I checked. It only weighs 20 oz. and is awesome with the SLR .626 block.

Thanks, I want to stay non-NFA, despite having SBR registered lowers that already have complete uppers on them, I have two unbuilt non-SBR lowers ready for uppers. I also don't want to pin a FH, I don't like not being able to make changes, and I can't pin it myself, don't have the tools, for I will carry the extra 4-6 oz.

I found a DD CHF carbine length 16" with .625" but I prefer midlength, but I am not sure how much it matters.

Might just go with the BCM because it has everything I want except CHF.

I recommend a Daniel Defense 14.5" Light Weight barrel with .625 diameter gas block and pinned on flash hider.  This would be the lightest I know of aside from getting a stamp for a shorter barrel.

It is unfortunate that DD is not producing the .625 LW anymore. When BCM releases the ELW as just the barrel, they will be my go to for LW builds.

+1 - That is what I did for my last ultralight build.  If you can find one, OP, then use it.

I am concerned that with a pinned 14.5" barrel that I will change my mind and be stuck with something I can't take apart. I feel it ruins the resale value of the barrel.

I also want to be able to shoot wolf/Tula ammo, and have read some people have short stroke issues with the 14.5" mid-length setup and that garbage ammo.

Gouf:  I highly recommend barrels from AR Performance.  Their reputation is outstanding.  Check out this lightweight 16" model (1 lb 9 oz) from AR Performance.  1in8 twist, Melonited CMV steel, .750 journal, etc.  My son put one of these on his 5.56 build and it is very accurate in spite of the thin profile and 1/2-28 muzzle threads.  Fortunately, they are presently in stock, which is usually not the case. - CW

I know you're looking for 16", but this 14.5" middy is what I'd use on a lightweight build.

The URL says government but it's a pencil barrel(at least on my end that's what is showing). They also sell stainless barrels of the same profile. 21oz advertised weight
