I am building a AR from scratch.  i have two questions about the "Armalite A2 Front Sight Clamp On w/ Screws"  Link here

1. Are there any suggestions on how to align this for zero?
2.  i'ts called an A2 but I am building a flat top upper.  i thought the sight had to be a "F" type to align properly for a flat top.  Is the "A2" the same as a the F or will it not work for a flat top?

I have one as of yet uninstalled.  Getting to it shortly.  If it does not zero because it's not F stamped, you can buy extra tall sight posts to install. They are cheap.

but is this version suppose to be used for flat tops?

F marked FSB is for barrels 16 inches or shorter and using flattop upper receiver. If your barrel is 20 inch, it will be fine.
The small amount of extra height in the FSB is needed to work with the detachable carry handle on the carbine length barrels.

Throw into the mix the various heights of commercial carry handles, or using a flip up rear sight with unknown height either commercial or milspec, your barrel/sight combination may be right on or just need extra adjustment at the front post.

Hard to tell without shooting it, but replacement front sight posts are cheap and easy to swap.

sorry while I have done a lot with builds I have never built one with a brand new barrel without the FSB attached.  I might not understand what the meaning  of the F mark is.

My build is with a 14.5 barrel (w/perm FH) so from what you have said I should go with a F type correct?

Is the Armalite FSB I am asking about a standard or a F type.  It doesn't specifically say can someone confirm either way?

"My build is with a 14.5 barrel (w/perm FH) so from what you have said I should go with a F type correct?"

F marked FSB is needed to run a flattop with milspec height carry handle/rear sight.

The taller front sight on the right is for adding the height to a non F marked FSB. The difference between standard and F marked FSB is only 0.040 inches.
I don't know about the Armalite FSB, but if it does not shoot where needed, the front sight post can be swapped out for additional adjustments.
Remember that both front and rear sights work together, so this issue may depend on your front & rear sight combination.

Thanks a308garand! I think I understand things better now!

As far as installing and aligning this, would I just eyeball it or is there a better way to line it up?

I usually pick out a target at about 50 yards with my laser bore sighter installed.  Dial in the sights to the projected laser dot downrange. This should get you close. Then fire a group and make final adjustments from there.

The F mark on the front sight base means it's for a flat top receiver. For any/all barrel lengths. -W

Have two of these in use on flat-top uppers; set them by eye, no problem with zero.  Word of caution: do not over torque the Allen screws; compatible screws are available at Lowes/Home Depot, but it is a pain in the ass to remove the broken screw.

MSD:  Yes, just eyeball the front sight to get it aligned with the top dead center of your handguard and/or upper receiver rail.  The last little bit of alignment can be accomplished with the windage adjustment of your rear sight.  Don't worry about f-marked or not, use a taller front sight insert if necessary.  Also, check out a similar clamp on sight by Yankee Hill that folds down for use with scopes. - CW
