If I am going with a free float barrel and handguard, and low profile gas block, I can use any gas port location right? Is there any functional advantage of pistol, carbine, mid or rifle length?
Edited to add: Sorry, will be 16" barrel from a custom maker. |

Lots of info on this topic here if you search for carbine vs mid vs rifle gas lengths.
The basic rule this forum seems to lean towards for which gas system should be on your AR based on barrel size: Carbine: 10.5-14.5in Mid: 14.5-18in Rifle: 18in+ Obviously there are some exceptions, but if you stay close to those numbers you're good to go for a basic build. |

I must suck at search 'cause I couldn't find what I was looking for. Thanks for all the info guys. So, the longer the gas system, the better I gather. I thought pistol might be kinda cool, with a short handguard, but function trumps form. Appropriate would be .... well, more appropriate. |

I thought pistol might be kinda cool, with a short handguard, but function trumps form. It is better in certain aspects. But in my opinion putting a pistol length or carbine length gas system on something that can handle a longer system is like putting 2nd hand tires on a Lamborghini. But there isn't anything wrong with it I don't think. Just seems like your compromising in a place that you could gain. |

Doing it from inside doesn't work very well. |

If I had cash and inclination (have cash) for a custom barrel, I'd probably go this route.
I really have no choice as nobody chambers barrels in what this gun is going to be chambered in. Custom really isn't that much more money than many quality "factory" barrels. Thanks all for the advice. |
