I'm kind of a NOOB to the AR-15 world so had some questions.  I want to build an AR.  I currently have an M&P15 w/ Eotech and a few other upgrades that I bought last 1.5 years ago.  Only has about 600 rounds thru it.  The gun is great but I feel the need to build one or atleast compile a more custom gun that you don't see everyday.  My own that I designed kinda if you know what I mean.  I'm not saying I wanna spend $3-400 on tools to build it, but I wouldn't mind building my own quality lower and then buying a complete good quality upper etc.  Main purpose is for range plinking and home defense.  I appreciate any thoughts or recommendations you all may have.  Just pretty much looking for a gun that's not an OFF THE SHELF GUN  that you see at every gun store.... Thanks

It depends on how comfortable you feel in your own handiness to assemble the rifle almost by hand. A good armorer wrench can be had for 50$, vice block set - 50$ for a good set, bench vise 30$ Punch set 15$ screwdrivers and hammer. If you think you will be building more, go no-go field gauges are nice to have. I dont personally believe more than that is needed. I understand what your shooting for on the "custom" part of it, but there is almost nothing to a lower, trigger and stock upgrades. your real "custom" work is in my opinion in your upper.
