Anyone have a preference on a flash suppressor or compensator that actually does something other than looks?

This in no way answers your question, but I love these. RRA Flash Suppressors

I use nothing but the A2  because they are lightweight and the cost. If I were to use something else I'd go with something that has a notch to blow through a lock, barbed wire, etc.

The Surefire Flash Hiders, AAC Blackout, Smith Vortex, and B.E. Meyers are a few that drastically eliminate flash in a pitch black area. Also, here are two YouTube videos comparing quite a few muzzle devices.

Happy so far with my Ranier Arms XTC.  Good value.  But it doesn't suppress flash very well.  Since I never shoot at night, this isn't a deal-breaker for me.

I've always used either a a2 or Yankee hill machine phantom

IMO, the AAC Blackout is the ne plus ultra of flash hiders.  Because its designed to mount a suppressor, the 3 prongs are tapered and the build quality is top notch.  Brakes are NFG for most applications, 3g competition excepted.

Interestingly, the old Warsaw Pact forces early on standardized on muzzle brakes in keeping with their massed infantry firing full auto as they advanced (human wave attacks).  Meanwhile, US forces have from the M14 on forward used flash hiders, in keeping with their emphasis on night fighting.  Muzzle flashes at night will definitely give away your position, as we discovered in the later, static phases of the Korean war. - CW

WATCH THIS VIDEO ABOUT 10 BRAKES AND FLASH HIDERS - trust me.. watch it.. its exactly some of the information you've been looking for.

They do night time comparisons and groupings ect ect and explain lots of popular brakes, flash hiders and hybrids.  These 2 videos are a great place to start instead of just picking one!
