I built my son (9 years old) a dedicated .22lr for this coming Christmas. I still need a charging handle but other than that it is complete. I bought a CMMG bolt hold open adaptor but I recently read that they are not that reliable. Have you tried one and if so do they work? You chose some nice parts for your build and I'm sure you will be very happy with it. You have a nice looking rifle. Get to the range and enjoy it. Great job!!

Thanks! :)

I do not have the CMMG Bolt Hold Open Adapter, yet...  I've heard mixed reviews on it also, however I do intend on purchasing/installing one.  Probably get it at the same time next month when I order that Taccom reliability kit.  Seems to work great for some people, while others have issues... Guess I'll just wait and see!  I'll post an update here when I get it, but it will be a few weeks.  I can survive without it, but it will be nice if it works how it should! :)

If you install yours, I'd be interested in hearing how it's working for you...

It will be a week or so till I get time to get to the range. It will be hard to get there without my son but I want to do it soon just to know it's good to go. I alread have the bolt hold open, just need to install it and adjust it. I'll let you know how it goes.

I heard Redi-mag makes an adapter that lets you use M&P 15-22 Mags in a AR-15 and the bolt locks back and stays locked back even when you take the mag out.

P.S- Lucky boy, that's a nice rifle.

Skip the CMMG BHOA and get the Boonie Packer Better-Mag adapter.

The CMMG BHOA will let you hold the bolt open, but it's a tinker's damn trying to get it to do that when the mag is empty, and it only works with special, expensive CMMG mags that have the bolt hold open functionality.

The Better-Mag adapter will let you use far better and far less expensive M&P 15-22 magazines, and will activate the bolt hold open when empty every time.

I have both, and wish I'd known about the Better-Mag before I bought the CMMG BHOA.

Hmm... Thanks for bringing that up...  I guess I was looking at the CMMG BHOA mostly because I already owned a few Blackdog magazines... Didn't want to change magazine styles (bought them over a year ago, just in case someone was successful in banning high-cap mags) ...   I suppose I could just sell them to recoup some of the money.  Definitely something to research some more/think about while I'm waiting for my next paycheck! :)

Nice rifle. I love .22 ARs, they're just lots of fun (assuming you have ammo). I originally used the BHOA with black dog and cmmg mags and switched over to the MP15-22 mags and BP adapter- it's well worth the switch. The mags are easier to load, about the same price, and actually locks the bolt back on the last shot. Even though the new gen cmmg mags fixed this problem, i'd still pick the 15-22 magazines

Thanks for the input, it certainly sounds like that is the way to go...  Sounds like selling my Blackdog mags off and picking up some of those S & W mags + adapter might be the way to go! :)
