Hey guys, first post first build. I got some stupid questions. Im looking at buying my barrel next and want to run flip up iron sights. I have the magpul handguards so I don't have rails to put the front sight on. So do I have to get a gas block and somehow mount it up there? I don't want to have to do any drilling on the barrel. Thanks

Yes, you will need a rail height gas block, or the YHM gas block with the built in front flip up. Or you could put a free float rail on it

To get where you are wanting, you actually have 2 COA.  1. Shave the current pinned gas block so that it can be covered by a longer rail; 2. Remove the FSB (will require ball peen hammer, drift and brute strength) and replace with a micro gas block or railed gas block.

Both jobs are pretty simple, do a little research here and on YouTube and you should be good to go.  Depending on what you are wanting for a final product (rail choice), either way is good.

Good luck.

You can purchase a rifle with a railed gas block so you can use your Magpul HGs, but be sure its height is the same as the receiver's rail.  Your LGS should have several from which to choose.  Do not put a plastic/polymer folding sight on the GB as the heat can possibly distort/melt it...
