This is my budget (not cheap!) 5.45 build the upper and lower are spikes the bcg I bought from a guy online for $140 complete. The barrel is a BA 16" melonited barrel with a melonited low profile melonited gas block. The gas tube is a spikes melonited tube and the handguard is a YHM rifle length lightweight handguard. I bought it as a blemmed part for $60, the blem was that they drilled the sling swivel on the side vs the bottom of the guard. I prefer my swivels on the side so that worked out well. I bought a magpul STR stock, moe grip/trigger guard, complete buffer assembly and LPK last weekend for $149 from PSA to finish her off. Complete cost for my 5.45 build will be around the $800 mark. Still don't know what muzzle device I will put on her, I want a compact style that will be easy to clean. Might have to throw a birdcage on there for now. I'm thinking about an AAC Single Chamber .223/.5.56 Muzzle Brake, like Aim is selling for $59 since it is open and make from stainless. |

Nice start! I'm starting my 5.45 build and using a BA barrel and lower build kit from PSA as well.
I think my build is going to be $1069.90 after FFL transfer fee and shipping costs. That includes a NiB bolt carrier and some other stuff I could have done without but I wanted the NiB bolt carrier to help identify the 5.45 from my 5.56 ARs but wanted to mirror my 5.56 AR as much as possible instead of using the extra AR parts I have laying in my parts bin. |
| This will be my 3 gun training rifle since I can shoot a whole lot more and not feel bad about it, will probably still use a 5.56 AR in competition since it is easier to find non magnetic ammo. If I could use surplus in competition I would. I would have liked to have gotten a nickle boron bcg but the cheapest I could find was $250. I forgot to mention the barrel is a 16" mid length tube. |
| Test ran the rifle today and it jammed almost every shot. The extractor wasn't fully engaging. come to find out there were burs on the edge of the extractor that were preventing it from fully seating so I carefully sanded them down with a sand disk on my drill pulling it against the chamber end off the extractor slot. Didn't take much and ran the remaining ammo through the mag with no issues. if it weren't below zero with a 20 mph wind I'd go test for accuracy. |
| I thought that might be the maker, good to know. I didn't have to remove too much material to get it to work perfectly but it should have worked out of the box. Still I saved $100 over the next cheapest bolt available. I fired another full mag out of it as fast as I could pull the trigger and function was perfect. Might invest in a heavy buffer to help reliability a bit. |
| All right, was able to sight the upper in on my MMC lower off my $499 black friday M-4 special from Classic arms, which is a very well built rifle with an even better trigger. Anyway, long story short It is an moa to 2" gun, the extraction issues are gone and the c products mags I bought from aim for $10 each work great now that they have been used a bit, they hung up the first go around. Looks like this rifle will be gtg. I'm just waiting for the remaining parts for the build from PSA, it's going on 6 days and they haven't even shipped, tried to call them and was put on hold for over 20 minute and gave up. In this day and age anything over 2 day to ship is ridiculous. |
| I tried calling them once to no avail. since I modified the extractor I haven't had a single issue with mine. Fired 90 more rounds of Russian surplus today without a single failure. I really love the way this rifle handles and the recoil impulse seems much lighter than the 5.56. |
