My first AR is going to be a simple, sort of old school look.  I want the versatility of a flat top receiver, but I want the looks, etc. of an A2.  What do you recommend for a carry handle and where's the best place to get it?  I've read RRA makes top notch ones, but do I really need to spend over $100 for a quality carry handle?

Shop around, but you are going to close to that, try the EE

I've checked the EE a number of times.  I've seen two listed, both already gone on the same day listed.  Is "Accessories and Misc." the right location?  It's the only place I've seen them so far.

I'm not an expert shooter by any means.  I have a cheap carry handle that I got from Amazon.  I think it was around $30.  I haven't shot it further than 100 yards, but I never planned to.  It is accurate at that distance.  I can't make any claims on its abilities farther out.  It stays true when I take it off.  It was a gamble, but I'm happy with it, considering I didn't have high expectations.

Here is the link.
It is mostly well reviewed.  It is actually cheaper, now, than when I bought it.

It doesn't have any markings regarding where it was made, so I assume it is chinese.

If you aren't looking for "top of the line", then this might be a good option.  If you have high expectations, or plan to shoot out to 500+ yards, though, you are going to spend $100+.  I'm cheap, though, and always choose cheap and functional, over expensive and perfect.

If I was in Wa where most of my stuff is I have a couple of the carry handles that come with the M4s the Army gets.  I don't know how they compare to the aftermarket ones, but I have never had an issue with one.  Might try Ebay, I am sure they show up from time to time.

If you live near any Army or Marine base, check the local MilSurp stores. Carrying handles, magazines, and other line gear have a tendency to show up.

Also gun shows or ebay.

I ordered a Spike's carry handle from AIM recently and was very pleased how it looked, nice finish.  $70 and has the square forge stamp on it.  http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XSTSAS10H1&name=Spikes+Tactical+A2+Carry+Handle&groupid=582
There was a guy selling used ones a couple of weeks ago on EE for about half the price if you want cheaper, may have to go back a ways to find the listing.

I've got a PSA and Leapers carry handle and they are almost identical. The Leapers is considerably cheaper cost wise.

Am I correct assuming a Colt will be top quality? If I see a used one how can I verify authenticity? It would be mil spec (compatible with an f marked front sight)?
