I am doing a build, and am using a Rock River Car A4 upper that has the A2 front sight.  I am going to be replacing that with a low profile gas block (probably a Troy) and a 13" Troy Alpha rail.

Here's is my question:....  After removing the A2 front sight it will leave the 2 holes int he bottom of the barrel that the taper pins were in...  Will this cause a week spot in the barrel that could lead to distortion in the barrel?

Would shaving down the A2 into a Low profile gas block be the a better option?  I am a Boilermaker by trade and have all the metal fabrication tools and skills.  I have read that painting with Hi-temp Header or Grill paint works, but does it hold up long term?

Thanks

No, the taper pin holes are not a problem; but yes, the best option would be to shave down your fsb.

Thanks guys.  I'll use the upper with the A2 sight with out worry.  And shave down the FSB....

Hi-temp paint (if applied correctly) will hold up?

Probably not, but will not show much under your rail.

Find someone local to reparkerize it, shouldn't cost too much.  Otherwise use high temp engine paint - should hold fine to heat just be careful with solvents.

I think the Troy rail uses the standard barrel nut to mount, right? So, shaving A2 down is probably a good option. If you had to go through the trouble of taking the gas block off to put on a different barrel nut, then I would say, replace gas block. Heck, I sold an A2 gas block for $50 earlier in the year. Those things are gold during crazy times. Hate to see one cut up.

Cut it down.  Woks fine and everything fits back together snuggly.
