I'm attempting to budget out to get an upper in the 7.62x39 caliber, and it would be easier to budget purchasing parts individually than to buy it whole (and it would be fun to do so as well).  I was wondering, aside from the barrel, BCG, and Mags (of course) what parts might be different from the standard upper? I'm still green to putting an upper together, so feel free to use small words, short sentences, and be as thorough as you like.

Thanks!

The carrier is the same, just not the bolt. But you got the 3 main changes. My only nuisance was the flash hider,or lack thereof, compared to 5.56 ones (first world problems I guess)

Some people recommend extra power springs but I would test fire before you buy, my original springs had no problems.

Even though I love building compared to buying a whole upper, I would consider buying one from a bigger name company just because the x39 bolts have a tendency to break ( compare the lack of material between the two) and it might be easier to get a replacement bolt if that does happen.

I used Rubber City Armory for their bolt, Cobra Tac Systems for their barrel, and prefer the 20 rounder mags cause I think the 30 or 28's look too goofy. Bolt and barrel should come out shy of $300.

Enjoy

Check SotaArms for parts or complete uppers.

I'd definitely get the extra power spring and the appropriate bolt/firing pin combo from MDI. makes all the difference in reliability across different types of crappy russian surplus. YMMV

Nothing other than what you mentioned, the weak point on these is the extractor either you have a good one or you dont.
I started with a standard carbine spring and H buffer and mine never missed a beat, using MGI 7.62x39 bolt setup.
I thing an investment in a enhanced firing pin for 7.62x39 would be good, model 1 has a very good one for $20.00,guaranteed ignition with these on any ammo.

Thanks!
