hello everyone,
I just bought a stripped rock river lower, that i plan to build into a precision rifle. Im new to everyhting AR15, but i had an idea of what i was wanting to build. Theroblem is, that there just so many parts companies out there right now it gets a little overwhelming for a new guy. I have had an sks rifle for some time now and ive wanted an AR for just as long. But i refused to pay the prices people were asking the begining of the year. So basically i have a stripped lower and i want a preciision style AR. So far all i decided on was magpul prs stock, ergo grip w/palm rest and a 20" barrel. The rest i have no idea what to use. Im a recreational shooter that plans for a 600 yd capable gun. Id like to stay arpund 1000-1200 bucks minus an optic. Any input is appriecated Thanks, Mitch |

Secondly, are you thinking "precision" as in match grade barrel and Zeiss glass? |

I started with a Armalite stripped lower that was available at my LGS and used all Rock River parts to put my AR together. I purchased a complete upper from Rock River directly on-line and completed the assembly. What I ended up with is an extremely accurate and reliable AR.
Since then, I put a B5 Bravo stock, 2-piece Midwest Industries drop-in rail, BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 charging handle and a Primary Arms red dot sight on it to finish it off. I'm completely happy with it now. |
| Spend a good amount on your barrel, bolt, handgaurd and trigger. The other stuff can be upgraded as you go but ive found it best to start on a good note with those products. RRA has an awesome Match grade trigger for a very reasonable price. Thicker barrel will give you better accuracy with higher shot count groups, but theres no need for a bull profile, Medium or Heavy is good. Handgaurd thats free floating, my favorite is the NSR 16.7" by Noveske, troy alpha in 15" works too. I get my plastics and mounts from LaRue. Check out Rainier Arms, White Oak Arms, and BCM for quality barrels. Bolt or BCG come from RRA, Rainier, and Young manufacturing group. |

Check out these uppers. Well built, very accurate with the Wylde chamber and a 1/8 twist for 69gr and 77gr bullets.
The Heavy Match barrel is a thick, full profile barrel that is slightly thinner than a Bull barrel.....same stiffness, easier to carry. The NM barrel is just that...a competition legal long distance pipe that is .750" at the block, as opposed to .920" I bought a complete Predator Pursuit a few years back, but ordered it with the NM barrel on it ( wanted the threads for a suppressor), as well as an Ace ARFX skeleton stock; so, yes you can get it that way if you want. Topped with Zeiss glass, it has been a remarkably reliable and accurate rifle. One of my favorites. RRA Heavy Match Upper RRA National Match Upper |

I had a similar unit and I have yet to find a barrel that shoots as good.... and I own some nice barrels. Also - consider building your own and using a Douglas SPR barrel from http://compasslake.com/ For the money, hard to beat. This assumes you will be shooting 100% handloaded or Black Hills 68-77grain match ammo, with top notch glass, a match trigger, etc. If you want a "precision 600 yard gun" but will be firing mostly 55gr milsurp or Wolf/Tula.... with a Simmons 3x9 scope, then just go get anything available as it wont make any difference. |
| well I guess what im looking for is a long distance rifle. I think im going to go with a Rock river upper, figure its quality and itll fit the lower the best? idk im just trying to take in all this new info. im not in a big hurry to get it finished as I plan on doing it for a winter project. its overwhelming to say the least lol |

Keep in mind, a rifle is a precision tool even in a budget configuration. My club has a 300 yd range and I can regularly ring a gong with irons using a Palmetto State Armory rifle I built on the hood of my truck.
The users on here are the real-deal when you begin to talk precision. They can quickly point you to great parts, techniques and build budget that would require me to take a year off grad school. Where in Ohio are you? |

I don't think I know I got myself into lol |
