Long version: So my wife has been sick and a buddy of mine has been helping me out around the house etc while she's been in hospital. Any way he has an old bushy A2 that he inherited that i showed him how to use etc. He loves it but wants to tac it out. By way of saying thank you I am going to put a collapsible buffer/stock assembly, which i already have a spare of, on for him.

However I also want to get him a drop him rifle length rail to replace his standard A2 handguards. I really wasn't looking at spending too much money (would like to be under $100 if at all possible). What is out there that people would recommend?

p.s. I am keeping all his original parts as no doubt in a year he will change his mind and want them swapping back.

For under $100, I think your chances are slim to none, unless you find some airsoft crap on Ebay.

Might I suggest the MAGPUL MOE rifle length handguard.  Not quite a quad rail, but you can add as many rails as he is likely to need

that's kind of what I was thinking anyway but I didn't know whether anyone had good black friday deals on some quads. I think that's probs the route i will go.

UTG is about it. I wouldn't put one on a serious build.

Midwest Industries, Yankee Hill, double star and Troy have them under $150.

Daniel Defense EZ rail is around $170.

I wouldn't put UTG on a funny build, either.

for a drop in quad rail Ive had great luck on the cheapo amazon parts, they were all on carbines.

But they (all 2 of them) locked up incredibly tight, allowed me to mount everything I needed, and took a beating. I wouldnt hesitate to go with one of the well reviewed brands
http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Model-Rifle-Length-System/dp/B003U683GO/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1385433829&sr=8-13&keywords=quad+rail

As for a freefloat YMMV I only have one experience with a cheaper free float rail.

The UTG PRO Line is made in the USA and generally pretty well respected. It's not the prettiest or the lightest free float rail out there, but it is definitely one of the cheapest, and they rock. Once again I have only used a carbine, but it did everything my expensive rails have done, it just wasn't as light, isnt continuous, etc. But it is a solid ass rail

I wouldnt hesitate to buy either. And unless you don't want to go through removing the hassles of adding a freefloat rail, I would go with the freefloat

Also, don't remove his fixed stock. A 20" rifle is better served with a fixed stock.

ETA: A used RAS (as mentioned above) would also be a great choice as well as magpul

I've used a ton of the UTG pro stuff........and had zero problems with any of it.........it is made with 6061, annodized and as pointed out earlier.....not the lightest....but it is good solid usable stuff.
