Greetings, Gents (and Ladies, of course)
I just joined the forum because gov'ment finally has me wanting to build an AR...or two. With registration rules on long guns changing Jan. 1, I went out and bought a couple Spikes lowers (one Calico Jack, one Punisher) figuring I'd have them in the cabinet and could assemble them as time and dinero presented themselves. But now that I have them, man, I gotta build at least one ASAP. I got the AR bug, brothers and sisters! I built a .223 bolt action on a Remy 700 action earlier this year that easily prints .5 MOA @ 100 yds on my better days. That's what I want out of my AR. I want consistent accuracy, brute force and mouth-watering good looks. Not looking for 1,000 yd reach; 400 to 600 should suffice. Weight is always concern. I'm fond of distance scopes with the mil dot but will take advantage of a dot on 45-degree mounts and a set of BUS. So here's the questions for all you experts/aficionados/smithies? For distance, accuracy and punch: Im thinking 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendele? (Don't really need another .223 do I?) What length barrel am I going to get the best accuracy out of for, say, the 6.8 (which is what I'm leaning towards)? What's a good upper to consider atop this Spikes lower? True they're all the same? Can't be, right? I'm wrenching this thing myself. Can't give another money for things I'm capable of doing my damn self. I love the finestst of the finest, but so do my wife and kids so the financial aspect is somewhat of a consideration. Tell me what you think, folks... |

For a precision AR look no further than the 6.5 grendel. If you want just a 500-600 yard gun, a .223 will suffice. The 6.5 has more energy than a .308 at 1000 yards. I have personally seen a 6.5 shoot a .5" group at 600 yards (yes, one half inch group at 600 yards!!) For the barrel, buy a nice cut rifled blank like a Krieger, have a smith profile it to your specs, cut a nice tight chamber, and match your bolt to it, have it nitrided for longevity and enjoy shooting one hole groups. |
