So I am building my first upper, forgive my ignorance in advance, and thanks for the help. So I'm building an SPR-ish/precision upper. I got my receiver in last week, a VLTOR MUR. it's NICE! Now it's time to buy a barrel. I've been looking at Noveske, White Oak Armament, and Rainiers offerings. I want something 18in and with rifle gas. My question is I don't know enough about these manufacturers other than they are good. What does the extra money spent on a Noveske get you compared to a Rainier Ultra Match? Will I even be able to tell the difference? Some help or comparisons/testimonies would be nice. Thanks.

Before you drop $400 - $500 on a barrel, what do you plan to use the rifle for?
There are a lot of other options that will give excellent results for less money. IMO a good barrel will run you anywhere from $200 - $400. I think Noveske barrels are excellent but a bit over priced. Here is an example of an excellent barrel Wilson Combat 16" SS 1:7 Twist Mid-Length - $250 |

I just look for thick walled construction (heavy bbl ok, but a bull bbl is ideal) and no chrome lining. Chrome lining cannot be applied evenly and will muck up the uniformity in the barrel. I guess a Wylde chamber would be nice, but my precision AR doesn't have it. It's just a stainless steel bull barrel (CMMG). I did get fancy and put a Les Baer Custom BCG in it. After that, I look for a decent 2-stage trigger so you can get the surprise break that is important for precision shooting. Then put money into the scope mount and glass. Those have to be absolutely rock solid and installed properly. Also, don't forget the obvious and make sure to use a free-float handguard.
After that is just load development. Anything outside of a ragged hole from that gun is due to me. |

Noveske use Pac-Nor blanks which are some of the best blanks you can get, however if you're using this for under 200 yds, a Noveske would be a bit overkill for the application. |
