So if someone was wanting to send off their 80% lower to get it engraved and coated, it would be unwise to do so (at least the coating part) before it was milled out.
But once an 80% is milled out, doesn't that change how you can ship and receive it?

I assume you can ship 80%s around no problem, so if someone wanted to avoid moving it through an FFL but wanted it to be engraved and coated, would the order have to be:
Ship to Engraver > Receive it > Mill it > find someone locally/DIY coating

otherwise

Ship to Engraver > Receive it > Mill it > ship to finishing company > FFL receives it > pay fees/get on books ?

Am I understanding this right?

Thanks yall

IIRC, you don't  have to go though a FFL weather or not the lower is in a 80% condition or 100% when
you are sending it for repair/work, only when you purchase or legally transfer Interstate a receiver then
you must go though a FFL.

Many shops that do firearms finishing/engraving have a FFL and usually require that the "lower" has
some form of engraving like a serial number/model number/name for Identification of the Item so it
gets shipped back to the correct owner etc.

At least this is the way I understand it...If I'm not spot on I'm sure someone here with a better understanding
of this Issue will make a correction...

Good Luck.

I just am not sure if adding something to it, specifically like the above, turns it into an item that would need to be treated differently

With a very few exceptions, you can ship any firearm to an FFL holder who repairs, refinishes etc. and they can ship directly back to you.  It doesn't matter what you have engraved on it.  It will have to be returned to you and you only at your address.
