No matter which tool I use (I've used several) to mount a flashhider I tend to mess up the finish of the flats. I've marred to one degree or another an A1, A2, Vortex, AAC, Wilson, and Rainier. Yeah, I know; it’s a tool, shoot it. But I don’t want a $150 stainless Battlecomp with marred flats on my soon-to-be completed Blackout. So, what’s the trick?

How tight are you trying to tighten it? I never had an issues using a 3/4" craftsman wrench.

Use the correct size wrench...if you only have one wrench, put tape on the jaws.

Thanks guys. I have used a 3/4" open end wrench - maybe its a tad larger than it should be. I've thought of tape but have never tried it. Guess I really should. That and buy a better quality 3/4" wrench.

I have always used a sliver of truck inner tube and 10 inch straight jawed vice grips locked across the flats.  The locking action of the vice grip allows me to let go of tool and to do the repeated eyeing necessary for precise alignment.

Tape is what I used as well when I blind-pinned my B.E. Meyers 249F.

I believe that last part only works if you use the green electrical tape. You have been warned!

Yellow electrical tape > Green electrical tape.

Besides tape, inner tube or a bit of leather, you don't have to Gorilla tighten the thing.  Some just can't help themselves and over-tighten shit all the time causing damage as they go.

Blue electrical tape. The others are permanent.

Exactly.  If it's a pin job it's welded in place.  It doesn't have to be cranked on.

Christ... I use an open end adjustable (cresent) on almost everything.  Tension the jaws before tightening and never a problem.

I'm a fan of the shim kits like AAC has.  A Battle comp shouldn't require enough torque to damage the flats at all.

But.....I thought neon pink duck tape was the way to go.  Or maybe it's ACU pattern Duck Tape.
