just completed my build....  have yet to test fire.... i think i have ran into a problem....   I purchased an assembled upper from palmetto state, and installed my own BCG and charge handle.  just fiddling with it, I noticed that the magazine has to firmly be pushed in... when i rack the bolt back, it wont feed a round in.  I pull back charge handle, and it wont spring forward.     now, i am a novice, and this may be common or simple.  I think I may have my mag release too tight?

im racking my brain on this....

It's possible that your magazine is being pushed up too far into the receiver, thus not allowing the bolt to go forward? Just a guess.

If the mag is loaded and the bolt is forward, it is common to require a little extra force to seat the mag.

With the bolt locked open, the mag (whether loaded or not) should just slip right in with a little click as the mag release locks into place.

When pulling the charging handle back to chamber a round, you are to just let it fly forward.  Don't try to be gentle with it and ride the handle forward.

With the lower swung open and the charging handle removed, the bolt should slide into battery with a little pressure.  If it meets with too much resistance, check to see that the gas tube is mating with the gas key properly.  The gas tube and gas key should slip right into each other without resistance.

How does the bolt carrier behave without a mag inserted?

Unless the mag catch cut is wrong, this is not likely.

OP, you ask if your mag catch is too tight...how tight is it now?

Dennis gave you some good suggestions above.  Function check your gun like he described and report back.  Also pictures never hurt.

ha,  thanks for the input fellas...  i want to note a few things

i have yet to put any oil on the gun.
the charge handle behaves normal with no mag.
i fed 4 or 5 rounds into my polymer mag and it didnt fail once.

it just seems real snug when slapping my metal (brownells) 20 round mag.
i have to "rock" the charge handle to get a round to feed.

If you are working with a mag that has live ammo in it you need to watch where the rifle is pointed.
Start with an EMPTY MAG.  Seat the mag in the rifle and see if that locks the bolt back when you pull back the charging handle. If it does remove the mag then press the bolt release on the left side of the lower and the bolt should go forward.  It is possible that you may have the mag release screwed too tight but check this with an EMPTY mag.  Since you are new to this rifle it would be good to find someone who knows what they are doing. If nothing else go to youtube and watch videos on it.

Well there's your problem, oil/grease your gun....
