I could not find a buffer a while back so I threw the dice on ebay. What I got was a STEEL BUFFER with three steel weights it weighs in at a little over 4 ounces. Would you use a steel buffer? I have never seen a steel buffer before. My concern is accelerated carrier and buffer tube wear.

As long as the design and weight are within specs use it.

If you reduce the contact areas there's less chance of damage.  For what it's worth compare the OD of the buffer to the OD of the spring.  The spring may already be in contact with the buffer tube.

Gee, that was helpful.

OP, you MAY be ok, but it's hard to say for sure, unless someone who's used one happens to comment here. I'd say it would probably be ok short term, but consider replacing it with a standard buffer asap. Yeah, I'm not much help either, at least I tried.
