Building my first upper.

In my search for a low profile gas block I have it narrowed down to the BCM Low Profile Gas Block (steel with set screws) and the Daniel Defense Low Profile Gas Block (clamp type).

My barrel does not have dimples.

The BCM says it will require gunsmithing for barrels without dimples. What does this entail?

Will the DD require gunsmithing? Or just tighten the clamps and go?

Thanks!

Some are pinned to the barrel, and some are just tightened onto the barrel.

What tools are required to pin the BCM to the barrel?

You would have to link the item, I don't know all the gas blocks off the top of my head, but if your barrel does not have pin holes drilled, you would have to start with that first.

Marking where the set screws should be on the barrel.  Then dimpling barrel with a drill bit, so the gas block doesn't move from the dimple.  Get a self centering punch and a drill press.

Most of the low profile gas blocks all use set screws now (not pins) or it is a clamp on type.

What BCM means is that you need a dimple in the barrel to help seat the set screw used to fasten the gas block. Some people use the set screw gas blocks with out dimpling the barrel, they use red locktite on the set screws and have no issues. The set screws are usually kinda knurled at the tip, so they dig into the barrel a little to help hold.

This too, if your dead set on dimple, very easy to do.

Install gas block with set screws (mock it up and tighten)

Remove

There will be marks where the set screws hit the barrel

Center punch and drill into barrel a little with a drill bit just to make a slight dimple

Reinstall gas block

DONE

While not ideal, this could be accomplished without a drill press using a vise, center punch, and standard drill correct. I assume the dimples are not much more than a mm. Correct?

Thank you for your help.

That should be fine, just need something for the tip of the set screws to grasp so the gas block doesn't move.
