New to this forum and wanting to build my own. I see lots of helpful info but so far I have not been able to find a complete parts list needed to assemble an AR. Ideally, it would have breakdowns of standard parts and advantages of using an upgrade instead of the standard part. Does such a document exist? Many thanks.

I'll try a brief one here.
im sure there are those that are much more knowledgeable than me that will chime in as well. 1. ) lower receiver. <- The FIREARM according to the BATFE. used to be had under 100.00 in7075 aluminum... now, your lucky at 250.00 for a stripped lower. 2. ) Lower parts kit <- Contains all detents, takedown pins, mag catchs, trigger, hammer, sear, springs, mag release button and springs, as well as bolt catch and springs and pins for it all. usually comes with standard trigger guard and a2 grip. as well as all pins, screws and springs needed for the kit. 3. ) stock kit <- Standard or collapsable, will contain a stock, a buffer tube, a buffer, a buffer spring, and if carbine will also have a castle nut, and plate. If standard stock will have a spacer (i prefer mil spec stocks some folks dont care some im sure prefer commercial the difference is the diameter of the buffer tube) Thats basically your lower parts (very basically as i didnt list all parts individually) since its yoru first time building you may be better off with a upper pre built. if you choose to build the upper by individually buying the parts, heres (loosely) what you'll need. 1.) upper receiver 2.) bolt carrier group. (full auto / m16 preferred by most) 3.) barrel (2 basic things to consider, length, and caliber. 20" for rifles think m16a2, and 16" think m4) anthing with a 1/9 or 1/7 twist is generally acceptable. get the barrel assembly as you want it to have the front sight block installed and the barrel nut. unless yoru running with a low profile gas block then you'll need a free float handguard and it doesnt matter if its pre-installed 4.) choose your handguards. 5) striped upper receiver kit ( comes with ejection door, hinge, spring, forward assist button, pin and spring. think thats the basics.. like i said its very loosely done and off my memory. if your in the very least bit mechanically inclined you should be able to assemble with little issues, its like legos for adults. good luck op. |
Welcome!
If say no on the doc. Anything generated is person opinion or manufacture backed. Stick with mil spec parts to start with. You might find other cool boy toys to add later and that's really the best thing to do. Get the gun up and running. Mod from there. Required items for a first AR- Join the NRA, and write your gov officials. Or you'll never have the opportunity to get the gun built. A shootable gun off of the bench. No bull barrels. Anything 14.5"-20" is fine. Lots of mags. Buy what you can afford and find. 10 per gun is a nice start. Ammo. You can't shoot if there's nothing to shoot in the gun. Budget for sights or optics. Scope? Aimpoint? Carry handles are $80-120 on the EE and a good place to start. Or Troy battle sights. Lastly, the gun needs a usable sling and a good light. A way to carry the mags (ammo can doesn't count). Like a chest rig or grab bag. After your have the tools in hand, learn how to use them properly. Professional training is really great money spent. And some of the most fun you can have without illegal substances and while keeping your clothes on. |
