| Does it matter which way it is installed? I plan to stake it. I think it looks cleaner with the smooth part to the rear. |

The wrench engages the teeth of the lock nut. It needs to be installed with the teeth towards the rear so that you can easily get the wrench onto it.
If you had the old lock ring without teeth, have at it. The old ring (hard to find) has a hold drilled into the ring so that a spanner wrench can grab onto it. |
| Don't know about "cleaner way", but the correct way is 3 small staking notches against the receiver 4 large wrench notches toward the stock with a new style nut. With the old style nut the three small staking notches still go against the receiver and the smooth edge goes towards the stock. |
