I am planning to purchase/build my AR-15(although I do hear a little voice occasionally whisper "AR-10" ). My preference is to build the rifle but if that's not the way to go these days let me know. I'm trying to decide between 6.5 grendel & 6.8 spc .

Which companies make good AR-15 components without breaking the bank?

Any particular websites you'd recommend for reviews, research, or purchases?

Is there a compelling reason to buy the complete uppers/lowers or to build piece by piece?

Any advice is appreciated.

My advice would be to go 5.56 first, buy a Colt or a Sig at Wal-Mart and go from there.

I built my AR with a 7.62x39 chambered barrel from SOTA arms. Everything fits tight and all lines up just perfectly.

Hopefully it's okay to assume their 6.8 and 6.2 barrels are the same machining quality.

Go with 5.56 for your first one...a lot cheaper to shoot.

Look at
Palmetto State Armory - for their specials on uppers, lowers, etc
Aim Surplus - great specials and prices on everything from lowers, uppers, barrels
Surplus Arms and Ammo - great prices, specials on lowers
Rainier Arms - great shop, great rails, barrels, parts...and cheap shipping $7.95 flat rate
Bravo Company USA - great rifles, well made parts
Brownells - parts, parts, parts
Citizens Armory - cheap shipping on small parts

If you have the extra to spend on tools, its a lot of fun.

Any advice is appreciated.
