Been planning my first AR build for a while now, a mock-dissipator, but I've just not had the spare cash. Finally jumped in and ordered a PSA blemished lower & MOE lower build kit yesterday because I knew they would sell out right away.
Payday's Thursday and I figured I would get everything else I need while it's on sale and available. I screen captured the two shopping carts I put together. Am I missing anything? Also, a friend keeps telling me to spend the extra money on a BCM BCG & charging handle. Any truth to this? Thanks! http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/318968_10151505821567222_220496323_n.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/407656_10151505821667222_773975132_n.jpg |

Rifle length MOE handguard on a midlength? What is the low pro gas block for? From what I understand to make a mock dissipator you swap the low pro gas block for the front sight assembly. Then tap the gas tube port on the front sight assembly to secure the hand guard cap, and finally re-pin it to the front of the barrel to secure the rifle length handguard. A friend told me I needed a firing pin. Is that not a part of the BCG? |
| The firing pin will be included in the BCG. Whether or not the BCM BCG is 'worth the extra' is something that can be debated all day, but I do have to say that I really like the BCM charging handle. After using two of them (Mod 3 on the scoped rifle, Mod 4 otherwise) I immediately notice the difference when using my rifle that doesn't have one. The normal ones work just fine, but the BCMs are... 'More intuitive,' I guess I'd say. Unless you have a larger optic obscuring the CH latch, I'd go for the Mod 4. Otherwise, the Mod 3 likes to get hung up on stuff or poke you in the chest if you are carrying the rifle in front. |

I would do this:
Go through Brownells for the Magpul stuff because they are cheaper. Buy the Middy upper you have listed and run that for awhile. Get a Armalite Clamp on FSB and use that as a front sight base instead of getting your FSB repinned. Getting the FSB repinned will be extremely difficult because the barrel diameter will not be the same .750 that it is one the barrel at the gas port. The Clamp on FSB from Armalite is extremely durable and will not shift easily and it also allows you to change configurations as you like. |

Do you have a barreled upper yet? If not, why not just get a real dissipator? PSA sells them as to lots of companies. Save yourself a lot of trouble with the low pro gas block and re-pinned FSB. The Dissipators on PSA are mock running carbine length gas systems, and I want a mid length. From what I've read true Dissipators (16" barrel with rifle length gas system) are tough to tune and are picky with ammo, and since this is my first AR I don't want to mess with that. I just like the look of the longer hand guard, in addition to a longer sight radius. I'll probably just run the midlength upper as is for a while until I'm feeling up to taking on the project. |

I'm no stranger to a mill, so once I had my hands on a FSB I was going to see if it could easily be converted to a clamp on style. It may be worth it just to buy a premade piece. Maybe I'll opt for a lighter flip-up piece since I plan on running optics. Does anyone make a lightweight piece that's not a gas block that just holds the handguard cup and maybe has a sling mount, or rails on top & bottom? No rush. I'll get it shooting before I change it up. |
