Hello all,

I have been flipping through the forums for a while, first post.

My buddy and I are currently compiling funds to build guns and as of now we have our lowers ordered and stocks picked out.

AR15.com forged lower, ARFX stock and a Hogue overmold grip for me.

Lower parts kit is the first question.

There are literally a billion options for kits out there, I want a solid kit at a good price; recommendations? Kits to avoid?

Uppers. These are the pain.

I think I want a flat top with a fixed front sight and a flip up rear.

I plan on grabbing a scope and having shot a few different guns with similar set ups the front sight was visible through the scope and it annoyed the hell out of me. Elevating the rings will alleviate that issue I know, but how far out of alignment will I be from a comfortable shooting position? I really want to be able to keep the same solid position while shooting with the scope as I have with irons. Is a flip up front going to be my solution to this?

Sights are also on my mind, the Magpul MBUS are so far my top choice and that is mostly a money driven decision. Any other reputable flip ups at that price point? New or used.

As far as the upper itself I am befuggled and cannot for the life of me figure out where to begin.

I don't want anything fancy or crazy. And I want it affordable.

Flat top (resolving myself to the probability that I will likely have flip ups on both ends) ready to roll with a forward assist, BCG, charging handle and a Magpul MOE front end. Where do I go to find a solid upper with quality parts at a reasonable price.

Look forward to hearing back from you guys.

Don

You learn to live with the haze from the front sight.  After awhile you won't even notice.

That said if you plan on shooting almost exclusively with optics you might as well get flip ups... MBUS are fine for that.

If you plan on swapping back and forth between optics and sights then you'll want to grab Troy's, they are much sturdier than the magpuls and the sight picture is better for straight irons shooting.

If you are going to be swapping optics alot prepare to be ass raped on quality QD mounts for your optics so you keep zero.

As far as your upper goes answer these questions -

What will you be using it for? .... bench rest for groups? Quick moving training? hunting? range plinking? Mag dumps while drinking with your buddies?
What type of ammo do you plan on shooting through it ... steel case surplus, match?
What range do you intend to use it at?
How much ammo do you intend shooting through it in a year?  Look at ammo prices... consider your budget... look at the price differences between match and steel case.
What is your accuracy requirement? .25 MOA? .5MOA? 1MOA? 2MOA? 4MOA? Broad side of a barn?

Your primary concern on your upper is your barrel.  You need to figure out how much accuracy you need for your uses and how much you are willing to pay for it.  Barrel life is another story but we can talk about that after you have figured how much you plan on spending on ammo in a year.

BCG is secondary but don't overthink it.  There are at least a dozen companies you could buy one from and never tell the difference between them.  People spend too much time on worrying about that crap.

Handguard setup is your next place to go.  I recommend modular rail systems, light and practical.  Quad rails are for military guys who need to hang everything including a toaster oven off of it.

Your receiver itself is the least of your worries.  they all do the same thing unless they are NiB or NP3 coated... then they are just easier to clean.

I think you missed some of it, maybe I didn't explain well enough.

I want to click on add to cart and in 3-7 days be rocking and rolling .

I don't want to assemble any part of the upper; this time.

What will I be using it for?

Its gonna be a fun gun. But I would like to be able to put a few rounds in the same general area at 200yds or so more often then dumping mags into beer cans and doors at 60ft.

Ammo is gonna be cheap. What ever I can get a fair deal on and not necessarily the cheap stuff either. The 223/556 isn't a platform I am deeply knowledgeable about but in experiences with other calibers you always get what you pay for.

This gun is a budget build with a focus on quality. I want low price, not cheap.

You hit the nail on the headfor me on the Magpul vs. Troys I really thought the MBUS were indeed backup only and not a very friendly everyday shooting sight.

thank you for your input.

Take a look at M&A or  Delton for kits. Either will serve you well.

If you buy an LPK from Palmetto State Armory you will not be sorry. The GEN 2 Kit that they have is very good and consistent. IMHO
