Hello, all. I'm relatively new to the forum (have been a member for some time, but recently started becoming active).

I've decided I would like to get myself an AR-15. However, being that I have not owned one (only shot a couple) I would like to get a very basic setup for my first - something that I wouldn't be concerned with beating up as I familiarize myself with it.

I've had a few models suggested to me that are relatively inexpensive (in the $600-$700 range), though I wonder if it wouldn't be better for the sake of familiarizing myself with the platform, and cheaper as well, to build one. So to that end I would like to solicit the advice of the experts and experienced users here at AR-15.com to help me to settle on parts that balance cost and quality - essentially the cheapest I can find that will be reliable.

Please feel free to share any specific suggestions you have for parts. Thanks in advance for your time.

Most any AR15 built with quality parts will be reliable. I have built three in the past two years. All of which only have had minor problems that were corrected with the proper ammunition. I would recommend bulding the lower yourself, as there are some cost savings involved. The rifles have similar lower setups. Spikes Tactical Stripped Lower - 100 DPMS Lower Parts Kit- 55  DPMS Buffer Assembly Parts- 40 and Magpul Grip and Stock - 80   All of which add up to around 275 dollars. Now in order to keep costs down, I would personally just purchase a complete DPMS upper from Midway USA for around 400-500 dollars. At this point you have saved a little bit of money and have a good, reliable setup. However if you would like to get a little bit more "custom" with your rifle for a couple hundred more dollars you can build a complete upper to your exact specifications.

Thanks for the reply. Would you recommend Midway for both upper and lower parts? What are some of the best places to look to purchase them?

I have used Midway USA in the past and am very satisfied with their service and shipping times. They also often times have coupon codes for 10 dollars off 100, 20 off 200.... and so on. Another good site to check out would be Bravo Company USA. Bravo Co. is considered to be excellent quality at an exceptional price. They are often times backordered but its worth the wait for some of their products.
Hope this helps!

That's very helpful, thanks.

Anyone have any additional suggestions to weigh in with?

Just finished my build, and the parts I used were not my #1 choice, but chosen from what suppliers have in stock in my price range. The best value parts are on back order everywhere it seems.

Noted. Thanks for the heads-up on that. Can I ask which parts you went with?

PSA is very popular for low cost rifles. They have quite a good reputation for quality. You will probably have to do some clicking to find stuff in stock, or you can just order it on backorder and wait.
