Working on my first AR build and wondering what is the best roll pin punch set to get? Do I need a complete set, or are there just a couple sizes needed for the build?
Thanks |

Here's another selection of roll pin punches, the Brownells five pin set has served me well. +1 on the roll pin holders, when you start dealing with smaller pins they are a real help.

Check out Cold Bore Custom Firearms for their selection of tools. I got the Lyman roll pin punches, as well as Cold Bore's roll pin starters and their special pivot pin and bolt catch pin tools. I would suggest getting a mag well block for supporting the lower in your vise, and of course the proper tool for installing your chosen receiver extension. With all of that, you should be able to take care of everything with a lower.
Cold Bore makes their own punches in-house, by the way, and I bought from them to support a small business making good products here in the States. |

| +3 for the Grace set. I used a set of Model 1 Sales roll pin punches on my first build and promptly broke one. Subsequent builds utilized the Grace set I purchased as replacements for the Model 1 punches and the Grace set is far superior in quality. The Grace set is higher in cost, but worth it in the long run if you're going to start putting them together from scratch (and most of can't stop with just one). |

Those are just standard type pin punches. Okie dokie.....didn't know the difference The RP punch has a teat that keeps the punch centered on the roll pin. But before you use that there's another cheat, it's called a roll pin holder (punch). It's a punch that's been hollowed out...you can easily start a roll pin and also drive it a ways before switching to the RP punch. Those two types of punches make it easier and lessen the chance of collateral damage. Not everyone wants to shell out for specialized punches for one build, though. Edit: There's one I forgot.....the bolt catch roll pin punch. It's shaved on one side so you can get the punch in line with that particular basturd pin. |
