I recently purchased a M4 upper and want to remove the barrel nut in order to install my Omega x rail.
2 armorers tried and could not get it out. This assembly is brand new from Palmetto. I have tried calling several times and no answer. E mailed and so far nothing. Does anyone know if Palmetto uses red locktite on their barrel nuts? |

Apparently you aren't the only one, be careful you don't snap anything. I'd probably wait until I heard from them to be safe. It doesn't appear that they compensated the guy in the thread( not saying it was or it was not their fault) below, so don't go breaking anything without talking to them first. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_301/220520_Everything_is_so_tight.html Good luck. |
| they just use grease. what kind I don't know. I also went the omega x route on my palmetto upper. it was tight, but a couple sharp blows of the hammer to the wrench broke it loose. sometimes you just need a little shock to get them to break loose. as a mechanic I do it all the time. |
| Some manufacturers do torque the barrel nut on there way too much. I've had to cut off a few barrel nuts with my Dremel tool very carefully before. But that is a last resort type thing. I will try freezing the upper, by leaving it in my freezer overnight, and then try to break it loose. If that doesn't' work then apply some heat to the barrel nut, and see if that doesn't help it break free. You can also try soaking the upper in CLP or oil overnight. But yeah having a solid vice and receiver block and barrel wrench is all you need to remove the barrel nut. Or yeah sometimes I've smacked the barrel wrench with a hammer to help break it loose. |

I have the $25 block that holds the upper by the pivot and takedown pin holes.
I use a piece of medium hard plastic (the rim cut off a spray paint can, with a cut across, unwinds into a 6" x 2" strip). The plastic strip goes on top of the picatinny rail, then the receiver is clamped in a vise... one vise jaw cushioned by the plastic against the rail and the other jaw on the bottom of the block. I've assembled/disassembled barrels from uppers a dozen times, never mars or damages the upper, and is secure as it can get. Cheap, too. Joe Edit; obviously I've only worked on flat top receviers like this... |

Yeah, I had trouble with my PSA upper as well. I find it amazing that even two different armorers could not reconcile this challenge. When I worked on my own, I did not have the clamshell block at the time, just the regular vise block, but even with a three foot breaker bar, the barrel nut would not budge. Good move on sending it to PSA though. They will take good care of you. As for my new build, I used anit-seize, which would also be a wise choice for these manufacturers to use. |

Thanks for the link! Very informative. Another good reason to build not buy. |
