I posted this on another board and thought I'd share it with ARFCOM.
After I built my Franken-Larue 6.8 the natural progression was to start reloading which lead to me saving my brass. I have grown tired of chasing my brass and I wanted a brass catcher but the UTG ones are junk, and I couldn't bring myself to spend $150 on one thats made out of a block of aluminum. No telling how much those things weigh. The production side of my company routinely throws out large sections of aerospace quality carbon fiber so I brought a sheet home that has just been sitting looking for a project. Well, I found it. I decided to make my own brass catcher.
The function tests were good and this morning I took it to the range. It caught my brass perfectly and didn't interfere with my operation of the gun at all. In case you're curious the bag is made of a carhart type material, sewn by my wife. The whole box attaches to the rifle with industrial velcro straps. The absolute best part is that the WHOLE THING weighs in at just over 3 ounces...yes...ounces. It's light as hell, works perfectly and you could use it as a wheel chock for a 737. It was a good weekend! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkNn5CJ5ET0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy3RlHTnz_0 The next step is to take the shell to work and have a foam mold made out of it so I can construct a new one out of one solid sheet of carbon. |
