Before I go all crazy here, why would it matter what caliber is stamped on the lower?

Technically it doesn't. But some people don't want half their gun stamped 5.56 and the other half (barrel) stamped 6.5, or 6.8 etc.

No you just need to pick one caliber to put on the Form 1.

I think if the lower is marked multi, you would need to mark the caliber you list on your Form 1 on the lower when you engrave it.
