I have an LMT Defender with a fixed SOPMOD butt stock.
The buffer tube is not a matte black like the rest of the gun (It is a gray color). I want to either A) Replace just the tube with a black one or B) Take off my gray one, paint it black, and put it back on. Here is my question: I have watched videos on removing the stock. It looks like step 1 is remove the buffer and spring, step 2 is loosen the nut and step 3 is unscrew the buffer tube from the lower. I have not seen anyone address actually removing the stock from the tube. Mine is fixed (since I live in NJ). Does anyone know if it is able to be removed at all? If I can just take it all apart, remove the butt stock form the buffer tube and put it on a new one I can put it all back together. But how would I pin (or fix) it again? Or if I just decide to paint my existing one, how do I unpin and remove the stock to paint? If no one knows I am just thinking it may be easier to tape everything off really well with painters tape and just spray the visible gray part (however this seems like the cheap/crappy way!) |

There is most likely an added roll pin that would have to be drifted out, preferably with the correct size roll pin punch. Once that added pin is drifted out the stock would slide off. To get the stock all the way off you usually have to open the locking device a little further than its normal travel and the stock will come off. Just observe the locking mechanism and you should be able to decipher. I wouldn't monkey with paint....just get a black, mil-spec tube from a reputable manufacturer. That LMT tube is well liked and you should be able to sell it on the EE. Be sure to declare that it has been drilled for a ban-state pin. |

What are NJ laws about removing the stock fixing pin? Are you creating an EBR when you take that pin out? Do you just have to remove the buffer tube from the rifle 1st, so the stock isn't on the rifle when you unpin it?
Always remember we have plenty of room in Texas. One of my best friends here is from New Jersey - he's mostly lost the accent after 20 years, but not the personality... Gig 'em, backbencher |

I'd just wrap the exposed part of the tube with black electricians tape or try this... http://media.midwayusa.com/ProductImages/Large/379148.jpg
Better to just leave it than do either of the above. |
